奇跡 (Qíjī), which translates to “Miracle”

奇跡 (Kiseki) as Japanese Kanji characters also translates to “Miracle”.

EDIT: Traditional Chinese characters 馬 (Mǎ) and 龍 (Lóng) have been changed to Simplified 马 and 龙, respectively, to better fit in with the rest of the symbols, all of which are in Simplified Chinese characters. This was pointed out by @trishmishtree .

WTF Marinette??? - Miraculous Tales of Ladybug & Chat Noir S2 Episode 9 “Glaciator” Review - SPOILER ALERT

imaginemae

So, I’ve said this before: my french isn’t good. It’s also not horrible either. There were some things in this episode that were said and just…let’s just countdown the shocking moments. SPOILER ALERT.

1. There’s some type of holiday going on. I can’t tell if it’s a holiday for best friends or superheroes, but I do know that while LadyNoir was busy being my favorite ship, Chat Noir talks to Ladybug about this said holiday and having dinner, and Ladybug nervously stumbles over herself. I’m interested to see the English translation because I’m 99% sure that she agreed to have dinner with him, and then DIDN’T SHOW UP. WTF Marinette??? We’ll come back to this later. (Edit: The rumor is that Ladybug actually told him she wasn’t coming in which my frustration with Marinette for standing him up is unjustified. We’ll see when the subs come out.)

2. Marinette gets super dark; telling Monsieur Glaciator (not his actual name) that his magic ice cream isn’t magic - it’s just ice cream. Of course, she says all of this after Adrien ditches and doesn’t show up (because he’s preparing dinner for Ladybug). My heart really went out to her when she walked away because she was in a very akumatizeable state of mind. BUT. Karma? Sorry, not sorry? Marinette is my favorite character, but she doesn’t get a pass for STANDING UP CHATON for some guy who doesn’t even notice how amazing she is because he’s effing oblivious. Chaton, on the other hand, does get a pass for not going to what he thinks is a gathering of friends to celebrate with his best friend.

(Edit: Ladybug did not stand up Chaton. She told him she wasn’t coming, and he didn’t believe her. Or at the very least he was just hoping. That makes this so much worse for me. It’s like the Befana episode in reverse. Actually, has anyone noticed how unlucky Adrien is as a whole? Yeah, Marinette is unlucky, but she always finds an innovative way to make things better. Adrien always seems to be stuck in unlucky and unchangeable situations.)

3. Meanwhile, Gabriel doesn’t celebrate the holiday with Adrien because he’s a horrible human being who breaks promises in order to terrorize Paris. Seeing Chaton being upset about his Father canceling, and then super happy to have dinner with Ladybug, and then set up the candles, and then seeing him sit down and wait - that whole process was a million times more agonizing to watch compared to Marinette’s situation. It was BRUTAL. It was EFFECTIVE. His Mom up and left him, his Dad always puts him on hold, and now Ladybug (arguably the next most important person to him after his Mom) STANDS HIM UP doesn’t show up?

It. Hurt. So. Much. To. Watch.

To the point where I was wondering if he should just move on (but then the end happened, and we’ll get to that).

4. Chaton sees Marinette by herself and joins her to vent #TheBalconyScene. I speculated that Marinette would vent about Adrien, but it’s Chat Noir whose venting about Ladybug. This scene made me go, “What the actual fuck Marinette” BECAUSE. SHE SAYS. “You’re in love with Ladybug, really?” LIKE SHE’S SURPRISED! WTF. I thought Adrien was bad, but this…there’s not a name for this kind of obliviousness. It was so gratifying to hear that information truly seep into Marinette, and have her genuinely apologize to him. Of course, Chaton asked her why she was apologizing because he’s unaware that she’s Ladybug.

Chat Noir then shows Marinette the scene he set up for Ladybug after he finds out that Marinette is also in love with someone who doesn’t reciprocate, and it’s nice.

The balcony scene really showcases why MariChat has always been one of the less impressive ships for me: this is the ship of true friendship. Neither of them are attempting to gain the other’s affection, and they spend the least amount of time together. This ship doesn’t have space to grow unless Chaton starts visiting Marinette more. The balcony scene shows that well; how this is a less romantic ship, and more of the relationship of understanding. MariChat is where Adrien and Marinette get to explore parts of each other that are otherwise hidden. This is why it’s the most popular ship, however for me, I just truly appreciate it. I still believe LadyNoir gets stronger through MariChat, but if anything this proves that each part of the love square has its place.

5. So. Chat Noir is genuinely PISSED at Ladybug - something we’ve never seen before. In fact, the villains faded into the background for the first time this season. The focus wasn’t on the danger of losing the miraculouses, it was on the danger of LadyNoir losing their strong bond of trust. Seeing Ladybug scramble to apologize correctly, yet it always coming out half-assed, and Chat Noir having a scalding attitude towards her. There was a moment he chewed her out, and if I’m translating correctly, mocking her use of the term “best friend/teammate”. I hope I never see them at odds like this again because yikes. (Edit: Turns out, he was also pissy about acting like a couple because his feelings were hurt. Double yikes.)

image

Ladybug tries to indulge him, holding him closer than she normally would, and kissing his cheek. Ya know, just making my heart warm, and Chat Noir forgives her (maybe a little too gracefully).

image

There’s even a moment when Ladybug and Chat Noir both give Glaciator this pissed off look - like he’s an annoyance that’s getting in the way of them talking to each other and I felt the same way. I wanted LadyNoir to have their moment without interruption.

image

6. And get their moment they did! When it’s all said and done, Ladybug and Chat Noir are on the balcony having their talk. Ladybug (having finally realized that Chaton is in love with her) finally tells him that there’s a boy she likes who didn’t show up for her, and she was upset and apologizes for letting him down. In which Chat Noir says, “A boy who is…” And for what may be the longest moments of my life Ladybug said, “He’s…” AND I STOP BREATHING.

But then of course at the last second, she’s like, “Nevermind”. BECAUSE OF COURSE. YOU COULDN’T JUST SAY “ADRIEN” COULD YOU MARI?

Chat Noir almost stops my heart by getting close enough to kiss her, and Ladybug REALLY revs me up because it looked like she was going to LET HIM. But Chat Noir is still Adrien, so he minds his manners and kisses her cheek and hands her a rose. The whole scene is incredibly tender and sweet and reminded me of Sailor Moon somehow. Ladybug is blushing, Adrien is somehow happy and now hopeful that his love for Ladybug will still prevail (even though he’s competing against an unknown boy), and LadyNoir is going strong again.

image

I can’t imagine being one of their kwamis at this point because it seems somehow wrong to keep the other’s identities secret now after all of this heartache. Maybe it’s better for them to find out on their own, but still…

7. Oh, but it doesn’t end there. Maybe the most shameful turn of events happens as Marinette gets magic ice cream and then leaves just as Adrien comes to get magic ice cream too. And they eat their ice cream on opposite sides of the SAME BRIDGE. WTF. I guess the ice cream really isn’t magic!

image

This episode truly marks the turning point of the love square. Marinette and Adrien are both starting to question their true loves, leaving room for other relationships such as MariChat, LadyNoir, Kagami, and Luka.

(Also whoever wrote in “have someone with Adrien’s shirt walk up the bridge to trick Marinette” is a savage.)
