Anton (Anthony) is a fisherman
Bear (Bem) is the merman.
Mermaids aren’t born, they are gifted/created. If you drown in the ocean, the goddess of the sea (idk her name yet) grants you the gift of being a mermaid/merman, but you have to pay for your mistake of death. You don’t feel the pain of drowning in the ocean. The price for her gift of life, is eternal life, and you cannot age.
Bear wasn’t a fisherman, but got stuck in sea and drowned. Anton knows about drowning in the sea and knows Bear’s pain of his long life. One day, Anton was on a cruise and a storm hit. He was the only person to not make it, and said dead to the world on land, he was given a tail and immortality for the world of water.
There is only one tribe of merfolk because not many people die in the ocean from suffocation. Accessories such as shells and pearls are worn by all and tribal tattoos made from a Bioluminescence gell or ink. It can be anycolor depending on which one you choose. Tail colors match their eye colors.
I’ll draw both of them as mermen later ;)

Omg, yes. Like they follow where they spent the night at, and when they finally fall asleep the dads will walk in like “shhh- you’ll wake them!”
And Bear’s gonna have like supernatural hearing so he’ll get super flustered and plummet himself under the covers while Anton falls off bc of his actions
And then the dads scream like girls bc it’s the fracking second tome they’ve been caught and then Anton nearly beets them senseless(not literally) and takes their phones away
“What the hell dads, why can’t you just leave meh alooone”
And bear’s still under the covers
