you know what i love about lance? he basically radiates good will into the universe.

lance tries to make others love him in superficial ways. he wants them to love him for being dashing, heroic, handsome, witty, etc. he wants to sign autographs and talk to pretty aliens and impress people. he wants to prove his worth by having a role worth bragging about. so much of his facade is centered around making others love that facade.

meanwhile, lance loves others with absolute sincerity.

when lance meets pidge, he immediately wants to having bonding moments with her, and, even after getting the cold shoulder, pays attention to what upsets her and defends her from iverson.

when lance sees someone falling out of some weird pod, his first instinct is to catch them. the razzle-dazzle act only kicks in once he realizes that someone is a beautiful princess.

when lance sees a strange little alien, his first thought is to knit him a sweater.

when lance realizes that coran, this old guy whom he barely knows, might get hurt, his instinct is to protect him at great risk to his own life.

image

when lance is being offered food after having mostly recovered from being injured in the process of saving someone he barely knows, he gives that food to the mice instead.

image

when lance sees that keith might hurt the balmera, a sapient alien, he stops him and works out a new plan.

image

when lance and pidge get a free cow from the space mall, he actually becomes her primary caretaker. (lance, that is NOT A BOY.)

image

when lance mentions the blade of marmora to laika, he’s already nicknamed them “marmorites”, considering them allies without question.

image

even though kolivan isn’t lance’s friend, lance jumps to his defense when the other aliens try to dismiss the marmora’s contributions.

image

when lance perceives laika to be threatened, he refers to her as his friend and shields her.

image

when lance expresses anger towards keith for being absent during the battle, it’s specifically on the basis of the welfare of those refugees…

image

…even though he’d supposedly been more concerned with the shows before.

lance does all of these things without pretense or ulterior motive. his showboating is so loud and attention-grabbing that it’s easy to overlook just how sincere he is most of the time.

lance loves his friends to a ridiculous degree, but he also just loves people! even if they’re dog aliens who only say “yup” or planets or people who used to be considered the enemy. he’s friendly, he pays attention to what others care about, he assumes the best of people, etc.

image

keith is the exception here; lance projected his insecurities onto him, assuming the worst of keith and being downright hostile at first. however, once lance got to know keith as a person rather than a concept, that projection faded away, and lance stepped up as his right-hand man.

it’s no wonder that so many fan interpretations involve lance being a great diplomat. when he’s not showboating, lance’s sincerity likely resonates strongly with anyone he interacts with. he’s not being friendly to get something out of you. he’s being friendly because he likes you on instinct and wants to get to know you and doesn’t want to see you get hurt.

hence, perhaps, sven’s quick turnaround from trying to kill lance to trying to save lance. who can blame him
