I mean basically
“You’re irreplaceable,” Ladybug says as the show proves time and time again that he just…isn’t?
Like if Chat Noir were to literally get turned to gold and taken out of the action, Ladybug would still be fine. She has the ability to deputize new heroes and effectively replace Chat Noir at a moment’s notice. The fact that Master Fu didn’t even think about filling him in until Ladybug twisted his arm about it is proof enough of that.
Chat Noir has not done anything any other hero could do other than be willing to take hits for Ladybug. He’s a large, cat shaped meat shield that occasionally proves to be a liability when he’s taken prisoner and turned against her. He isn’t allowed to contribute anything other than his fighting skills and isn’t included in any strategy meetings between Marinette and Master Fu. I mean, Fu shuts him out for what seems like a year and his only justification is a faux-deep koan about noodles and water.
The narrative says partner but doesn’t treat Chat Noir like Ladybug’s partner. We are constantly told he is relevant but the story doesn’t prove that.
And the most infuriating thing is that they seem to be semi-aware of that. Adrien has a massive insecurity complex about not having Ladybug’s full trust and being kept in the dark but every time it’s brought up, it’s handwaved away as “oh don’t be silly we still like you.”
Like, hey, maybe show us an Akuma battle that is only winnable with Chat’s help/skill set. Let’s see Marinette akumitized and have Chat work with Tikki to get her back! Maybe show Adrien doing detective work on his father who had a book on Miraculous in his office. Let’s have the question of “does Ladybug really need Chat Noir” and is he actually needed brought up and addressed. Let’s show Fu actually mentoring Adrien and maybe relaying some information outside of “here’s some cheese to do your job better; now leave me alone.” At this point, I’m almost begging for a heel turn because that at least would give him significance in the story.
Until you show that Chat is Ladybug’s true equal partner, it’s just not true.
