Prompt: When they get to earth, lance wants to stay.

ravenvsfox answered:

You were the first in line, so you get prompt numero uno!!

Outside the cabin of the shuttle, pebble stars are tossed out into the dense, black lake of open space, so dark that Lance’s eyes start teasing out imaginary colours. It’s always so still out in the yawning nothingness. If he didn’t know how a bucking shuttle felt beneath him it might be hard to tell that they were moving at all.

Inside, the glow of tech is cool and purple, and if he squints at the light and not the Altean characters, its almost like the Garrison simulators, or the speedometer of the only car on the road at night.

Pidge is punching in coordinates next to him, and she twists her fingers over the frame of her glasses like she’s trying to make them zoom. For all he knows, she might have engineered binoculars into her glasses just like she tucks lifts into her shoes, making modifications to herself just like she does to everything else she can get her hands on.

He squirms, digging his toes down into the unyielding bottom of his boots, wanting to feel something real and movable, something not so claustrophobic. His hands shake on the controls, and he clenches his fists until they can’t.

They’d left the lions on the nearest neutral planet, defences up, Romelle and Krolia at a nearby base. Coran was on patrol duty, winding between their massive paws and craning his neck to speak earnestly up at them. It’s comforting to think of the lions as as they left them, a circle of statues and their sentinel.

It’s the weirdest thing, but sometimes Lance thinks that the way the lions talk to him is the way Gods talk to prophets, and everyone else in the cosmos just has to trust his blind, bruising faith.

He pushes a hand into his hair and just holds it there, steering left-handed and feeling his pulse push anxiously against his fingers.

“Uh oh, are we getting introspective?”

Lance’s hand jerks back to the controls. “Oh—uh. Sorry. We’re just,” he taps their trajectory on the luminous map between them. “So close.” He hadn’t realized how close until he’d checked, but his chest had been getting more and more crowded, like all of Earth’s radio waves and clutter was close enough to hear.

“Less than a light-year,” Pidge agrees quietly. The look in her eyes is so terribly far from home. The part of her that riffled through the desks of authorities and cut all her hair off is still with her brother in the guts of the resistance.

“Then why doesn’t it feel like we’re going home, huh?” Lance asks, smiling through the weirdness in his head. “Where’s the fanfare? Where’s the galaxy-wide fireworks display?” Pidge smiles tightly back at him.

“I didn’t think we’d get to go home until our mission was done, and, well, I don’t know. Maybe we don’t deserve all of that yet.”

“Maybe you don’t,” Lance corrects. The shaking’s only getting worse. He doesn’t know what’s going to happen when they touch down and it’s making his hair stand on end and his teeth chatter. “I’ve deserved it since day one.”

“Oh yeah?” she says, laughing. “All that winking at instructors and seeing how many peanut butter m&m’s you can fit in your mouth paying off for you?”

“Only in every way possible,” he says. “I don’t know if you’ve been paying attention but I’m a galactic superstar. Seriously.”

“Seriously,” Pidge echoes. They lapse into silence, and Lance’s body kicks up a fight when he sees the luminescent blue shape of the Earth drifting into view like a tossed frisbee.

“Jesus,” he breathes. He eases up on the speed, and they spend a suspended minute floating, watching, breathless. “Is she beautiful or what?”

“Usually I don’t trust your taste, but this time—“ she chokes up suddenly, surprising herself, and she tries to shield her face from view. Lance crows at her, his own vision blurring.

“Pidgey,” he says joyfully “We’re home.”

“Shut up.”

“Pidge,” he croons. She looks at him, eyes bright and wet, and neither of them can keep from grinning.

“We were born right down there,” Lance informs her. “The doctors wept with joy when they saw me.”

“They probably didn’t think your big head was gonna come out.”

Lance ignores her, feeling the jitters get brighter, harder to fight. “One moon, seven seas. It rains the kind of water that’s safe to drink. There’s barbecue pizza down there, Pidge.”

“I know,” she says.

“I can’t believe this. My mom’s right there.”

They’re still knee-deep in a revolution. They’ve been hurtling through space at warp speed in close quarters for weeks, and the only home they’ve ever known out in the black was blasted out of the sky, but the idea of setting foot on Earth without crawling into his mother’s arms is unthinkable.

The shuttle comms crackle, and Hunk’s voice comes through, “you guys seeing this?”

“Oh yeah,” Lance says. “You feelin’ as misty as we are, buddy?”

“He’s been crying since we passed pluto,” Keith says flatly.

“Oh yeah, that was an emotional gut-punch,” Hunk says.

“Paladins,” Allura interrupts smoothly, “I trust you’re happy to be home. I know it might be hard to believe considering my situation, but I’m happy for you as well. Pidge, can you set a course for where your father has taken those schematics? It’s of the utmost importance that we not waste any time.”

His heart sinks. “Funny, that feels like all we’ve been doing. A lot of autopilot and Altean uno and drinking whatever was in that funky bottle under the console.”

“Lance,” Allura says disapprovingly. The empty air hums and someone breathes out quickly.

“Princess, you’re not saying that we won’t be able to visit our homes, are you? Our families?” Hunk asks.

“I wish you could,” she says, sighing. “But we’re still fighting a war. I don’t think it’s practical—or safe—“

“No,” Lance says, aborted. “I mean—no.”

“Lance,” Keith says quietly.

“I’m not talking to you,” Lance seethes. “Pidge, put in the coordinates 23° 8′ 22″ N, 81° 17′ 10″ W, will you? I’ve got a couple of errands to run.”

“We’re not splitting up,” Allura says firmly. “I’m so sorry Lance, but the team is more important than—“

“Than my family?” he says, disbelieving. “Sorry, no, absolutely not, agree to disagree. I know that I’m supposed to save the universe or whatever, but I promised my mom—“ he chews his lip savagely, watching the whole world rush up to meet them and feeling helpless want thrash in his stomach. “I won’t be any help at the Holt’s. No one needs a guy with a rifle when you’re trying to put together a whole new teladuv, right? You don’t need me.”

“Yes we do,” Shiro says firmly, and Lance closes his eyes, fleeting. He’s having trouble focusing with his dearest wish and his nightmare both grabbing for a half of his brain.

“How about I go with Lance to Cuba and keep things on schedule,” Hunk offers. “I’d love to see his mom again. She always brings us empanadas.”

“We need your brain,” Shiro says regretfully. “We can’t do anything without your eyes on this.”

There’s a long silence, and Lance eases the thrusters to a more manageable intensity, muscle memory.

“I’ll go,” Keith says finally.

Jeremy’s Livestream for Lance’s Birthday Part 2!

You can find part 1 here. The first 4 questions was from a small 20 minutes stream before season 6 aired. After them, everything else was for Lance’s birthday stream (part 2) which was for 1 hour. I took a bunch of notes again so yeah….You can watch his live streams on the CoStar app for free! Ya gotta register, but it’s pretty good.

From a stream before season 6 released!

Does Keith have a soft spot for Lance?

- Everyone on the team does, including Keith. Lance is kinda like that friend that says and does stupid stuff but that’s what makes you love him. If there was no Lance on the team, there’d be a void. So yeah! Keith has a soft spot for Lance!

If Lance was a Disney character, who’d he be?

- Jeremy answered Aladdin but the questioner suggested Flynn Rider from Tangled. Then Jeremy got confused as to which character Lance would be. So either Flynn Rider or Aladdin.

How did Jeremy get chosen to voice the Bi Boh Bi?

- It’s a very easy thing to voice, and everyone on the cast might’ve done it at some point. So of course he did it too.

What does Jeremy think of Lance’s character development?

- He loves it! He likes seeing his relationship with the team develop more.

This is from the birthday stream (part 2)!

How old is Lance?

- He started off as a 16 year old, but considering how long they’ve been gone, he might be 17. (Not official, but that’s what Jeremy thinks).

What would each Paladin give Lance for his birthday?

- Pidge: a new video game

- Shiro: a cool weapon

- Allura: a handmade Altean necklace

- Hunk: make a cake!

- Coran: disgusting Altean treat

- Keith: his presence

Lance in season 7…?

- He, as well as everyone else, is gonna have to adjust to being back on Earth, seeing their family and friends and things changing!

What would Lance want to do with the Paladins for his birthday?

- Have a big birthday bash!

- Go on some planet with water or something like it to surf!

- Hold a big Voltron beach party!

Do the Paladins was their clothes?

- Most probably! They might have some futuristic advanced really quick washer and drier stuff.

- Or maybe they have 7 sets of the same outfit haha.

If Finn (Adventure Time) and Lance switched places, what’d happen?

- Finn would be fine and deal with it.

- Lance would freak out.

Which character would Lance play as in Super Smash Bros and Mario Kart

- SSB: Link

- Mario Kart: Maybe Toad or Mario.

Lance seems to be missing his father in the pic when we see him in that mind training exercise in season 1. Does that mean his father was absent and he has to step up as an older sibling? How does this impact the way he interacts with the Paladins?

- Jeremy said that’s really observant, but he thinks Lance has a father lol. His dad might be in the pic haha.

- He knows when to follow and when to lead.

- He wants to achieve a level of responsibility?

How would each Paladin react to Lance’s birthday? Would Keith do anything?

- They’d at least celebrate by making cake or eating something together if they aren’t busy saving the universe.

- Keith isn’t that mean. He’d probably just say “Happy Birthday” and that’s it (he’s a man of a few words).

Lance has always been a 2nd choice, will he ever be a 1st choice and not a rebound for someone?

- Jeremy said that Lance was the first choice for the Blue Lion so he isn’t always a 2nd choice!

- He’s definitely gonna be a 1st choice for someone out there and not be a rebound!

Will Lance be bonding with other characters like Keith or Shiro later on?

- Yeah! He hinted at them being cramped in the lions since they have no castle to travel with so some people are gonna have to deal with each other whether they like it or not (possible funny scenes?)

- He talked a bit about Lance and Shiro having some moments. And also with Keith.

Flashbacks with Lance like we got with Keith and Shiro?

- The answer isn’t clear, ‘cause Jeremy doesn’t remember he says. But he knows there’ll be some Shiro and Keith flashbacks. Not sure about the other characters…we might?

Out of everyone on Team Voltron, who takes Lance seriously the most and gives him the strength to be great? Who’d help him realize his full potential?

- Shiro! He’s good at seeing other’s potential.

- When Keith became the leader, he also helped him out. I think Jeremy hinted at seeing more of Keith do that.

- Jeremy mentioned that Lance and Allura will have some great moments encouraging each other. Allura will especially help out Lance.

If Lance were to impress his significant other, what song would he sing?

- Jeremy mentioned lSexy backl by Justin Timberlake lol.

- Then he changed it to “All of Me” by John Legend.

How did Lance and Hunk’s family react to their disappearance?

- Jeremy said they probably didn’t think he was dead and would try to look for him. The Garrison would’ve notified them that they were gone, but they’d demand more info.

Has Jeremy ever watched Voltron in different languages?

- No but he has seen some clips.

As a voice actor, one must understand their character to voice them. That’s why fans ask voice actors questions about their characters, because they should know the most about them. But with VLD in different languages, of course these other VA’s have different opinions and looks about their character versus the original American version. With that being said, if you could meet any of Lance’s other VA’s, what would you ask them?

- He never met anybody voice his characters in a different language. But he said he’d ask them what they thought about his work, as it’s the one they have to rely on in order to understand the character into their own language. He’d ask them what their first impression was of voicing his character was to see how they look at Lance versus his ideas and the original work.

What is Lance’s favorite meme?

- Lance himself is a living meme.

- Any meme with flirty cheesy lines.

- This meme:

Lance’s Repressed Feelings (for Keith)

theashesofthefirststar

At the beginning of the series, we know that Lance is hyper aware of Keith. From what Keith’s opinion on him is, to what Keith is doing, down to Keith’s hair cut.

image
image
image

And of course, a lot of this is based in feelings of inferiority. But it’s also based in admiration and the desire to stand beside Keith as an equal.

“We did it. We are a good team.”

image

Lance sees that Keith and himself can work together well, and in the second season, he’s vocalizing his admiration and fondness for Keith, even if its only to a stranger.

image

He also realizes that he does care about Keith’s well being.

image

Which, admittedly, Lance is a genuinely caring person who seems concerned with everyone’s well being no matter how well he knows them. But it’s still important, because at this point, they’ve been no less than agnostic towards each other.

What’s also important in season two is that Lance all but says he’s sees Keith as a selfish person when Keith was thinking of leaving Allura behind. And in season three, he states that he sees Keith as essentially hungry for leadership, to the point he’s willing to lie to get it. He thinks Keith sees himself as above everyone else, especially him.

image
image

Here’s the thing that you have to understand about Keith and Lance’s relationship. So much of it is based off of a false narrative built up in Lance’s head. Even more so, a lot of the assumptions Lance has made about Keith are fueled by his own feelings of inferiority, an inferiority that Lance doesn’t deal with well. An important thing to remember about Lance is that he’s not always the most self aware. Or more so, a big theme in Lance’s arc is him not knowing himself or his place, and you can see that in how he deals with his emotions. If he doesn’t understand how he feel/likes how he feels, he often won’t regard them.

In season three, Lance’s arc thematically revolves around him coming to terms with how he sees himself and how he sees the others around him - specifically Keith.

In season two, Lance was questioning his importance to the team, but during the events of season three, Lance’s selfless nature conflicts with his feelings of inferiority and he’s forced into recognizing his own sense of low self worth. Towards the end of the season, during the bedroom scene, it’s no longer a question, but an answer.

image
image
image
image

Lance finally recognizes what he considers his own sense of value to be, something that a lot of rejection forced him to come to terms with. This is also the season where his out look on Keith starts to change. All of his assumptions he once held about Keith are knocked down. Lance begins to sees Keith as someone more human. He’s uncertain, he’s grieving, and is also capable of realizing his mistakes and putting the team first. Most pivotal of all, he sees Keith as someone who genuinely tried to comfort him and thinks of him as a necessary part of the team.

This is probably a lot for a person like Lance, but the change is there, and Lance will have to reconsider everything he thought he knew about Keith/his feelings regarding him.

Hence this scene, where we see the change through Lance’s eyes:

image

And then season four rolls around.

Remember that when Lance doesn’t get how or why he’s feeling something, he’ll often plays it off. So when Keith starts splitting his time between the Blade and Voltron, despite being very obviously the most concerned- if his facial expressions and constant questions of Keith’s whereabouts are anything to go by - he downplays it. He says it because Keith is messing up their shows, but I think anyone paying attention can tell that it’s more than that.

image
image

Then Keith leaves, and again, Lance is obviously the most distraught about it. Where the others are shown to be sad or proud, Lance is animated in a way meant to show hurt/rejection/frustration. He, again, plays it off because he doesn’t understand his own emotions about the situations.

“Who am I going to make fun of?”

image

This is when something strange begins to happen. Its subtle, but there is certainly a divide between Lance and the rest of his teammates. It’s a constant theme, him feeling a distance between Pidge, Hunk, and Allura and himself. Pidge and Hunk because they’ve grown so close and often misunderstand the reality of Lance’s feelings. Allura because of her relationship with Lotor

Although, I’d argue the distance between Lance and Allura isn’t entirety because of her relationship with Lotor, seeing as this divide started before Lotor was even in the picture back in season four. We’ve also seen Lance expressing insecurities that Allura didn’t pick up on in the training room, not by any fault of her own, but because there is that divide. Allura is essentially the leader of the movement that will free the known universe and the only hope for preserving Altean culture.

Rather this divide will persist is hard to say - Although, since a big part of Voltron is about reuniting with your family you once lost, I do think Allura will go on to lead the new Alteans. But either way, although we do see glimpses of Lance feeling like the outsider of the team before season four, It’s important to note that this distance Lance is feeling between him and the rest of the team becomes truly prevalent and visible to the audience once Keith leaves. It’s not just him feeling left out, but instead, the audiance actually seeing him being - inadvertently - left out.

And this makes sense, because despite Keith and Lance’s antagonistic moments, the two are often seen as a pair. When Keith doesn’t understand something, he looks towards Lance to explain. Lance is always there ready to tease Keith in someway. Lance is often running after Keith, trying to keep up with him or trying to pull him back. He was Keith’s right hand. This gives the line “Who am I going to make fun of” more depth, because yeah? Who is he going to tease? Who’s going to be by Lance’s side?

Keith and Lance never seem to be far from each other in the earlier seasons, but one day, Lance looks to his left, and Keith isn’t there anymore. As Jeremy said, it leaves him with a void. It leaves him irritated, but he doesn’t understand why.

Fast Forward to season six and Lance is absolutely gobsmacked at the difference in Keith’s appearance. Visibly, in a way that no one else is. This happens again when Lance steps up to greet Keith and ask if he’s really Keith’s cooler more grizzled older brother. And again when Lance literally can’t find his chill, questioning Keith about where he’s been and why he came back, essentially, so different.

image
image

Partially, it’s for comedy sake, but I really don’t think they’d reinforce Lance’s hyper awareness of Keith without any reason. Especially when you consider just how upset Lance was when Keith brushed him off.

image
image
image

Especially when you consider how discontent yet confused and closed lipped he was about Keith’s absences on the team.

Were not done though, because there are a few more interactions that really stand out. Keith hails the castle of lions and Lance expresses relief and happiness that directly parallels a scene between Allura and Lotor during the D&D episode.

Then we have the end of episode one season seven. I’ve seen a lot of people say that Lance was flirting with Keith because of the whole finger gun under the chin thing. And you guys might be right, but for credibility sake, it’s important to remember that Lance doesn’t only do that when he’s flirting. He also does it when he trying to show off.

But even if he’s not flirting, he’s most certainly is showing off. Keith directed a question to the entire group and Lance answers it directly to Keith. He’s trying to impress Keith specifically. There’s no other way to look at it.

This is important because Lance hasn’t really tired to impress anyone like this in a long time. It’s very reminiscent of the earlier seasons when Lance was less sure of himself and his feelings. And hmm, what feelings has Lance been shown to be unsure about? Especially in regards to Keith? (see everything written above)

If this had of happened once or twice, I could’ve passed it off. But between Keith returning to the team and episode one of season seven, they’ve made a point to emphasis Lance’s hyper awareness of him five different times. They made a point to emphasis how upset/confused he was when Keith left. They made a point to emphasis the growing loneliness he felt after Keith was gone.

It all comes down to emphasis, and yes, I understand that Lance’s feelings regarding  Keith haven’t been as openly expressed as his feelings regarding Allura, but that’s part of the point. It took six seasons and Lotor sweeping in for Lance to finally understand/vocalize just how serious his feeling for Allura are. Compare that to his vlog. Lance obviously has feeling for Allura, but he tries to play it off and cover it up, because he’s not ready to deal with the emotions he feels or the idea that Allura might not feel the same way. LM confirmed that Lance’s over the top flirting was something he did because he didn’t want to get hurt.

Similarly, one of the writers said that Lance wasn’t ready to go there emotionally with Keith - in regards to the bonding moment. Which makes sense, because Lance also used/uses bravado with Keith in a similar that he did with Allura and with the other girls he has flirted with.

Meaning, if Lance doesn’t understand something or isn’t willing to deal with it, he just… won’t. He’ll hide it beneath bravado. But everything that happened in season three, and then Keith leaving, has forced Lance into considering that there’s something up with his feelings about him, something that doesn’t quit fit. Now that Keith’s back, Lance is more aware of him than ever. At some point, he has to deal with what ever it is he feels towards Keith. Narratively speaking, it’s has to happen. It’s been set up to happen.

What really solidifies this for me is this moment:

image

They could’ve reinforced Lance’s persistent crush on Allura in so many different ways, but they did so in a way that parallels a moment between Keith and Lance. Allura even said “We did it" just like Lance did to Keith during their bonding moment, but then Lance adds the “I think we make a great team” part (while cradling himself) They did so in a way that would remind us of Lance opening up to Keith while implying romantic subtext. While implying that, even just subconsciously, some part of Lance hasn’t let go of that moment with Keith.

I’m not saying I know for sure that Keith and Lance are going to end up together. Or that I know for sure what’s going to play out between Lance and Allura, but what I do know is that Lance’s arc is about not only discovering his place on the team, but also who he is as a person and being true to himself. It’s about understanding his own emotions and resolving them.

And there is most certainly something unresolved about Lance’s feeling towards Keith.
