Defending the very valid Marinette is important to me and it pleases me that people are grateful!

In terms of the fandom, it’s a toss-up. As someone who has Marinette as one of her favorites, I understand that one has to look at the grand scheme of things and take in a lot of information just to have a full comprehension of Marinette’s character, because there’s a lot to analyze and dig through.

That said, I’m not fond of ideas that have Ladybug be criticized for not revealing her identity to Chat or not telling him about Fu earlier. That wasn’t her decision; Tikki told her not to tell anyone her identity and “Syren” heavily implies that Fu told her specifically not to tell Chat. At first glance, yes, it’s easy to blame on Marinette because the show has an unfortunate flaw of having things be a little more vague than they should be (and giving too much screentime to Adrien blaming Ladybug for everything, which can sway certain audiences), but ultimately, Marinette is a professional superheroine who is just doing what she’s told.

I imagine that might also be a contributing factor whenever certain parts of the fandom view Marinette as one of the worst characters in the show. Marinette tends to fluctuate very rapidly depending on where the plot drops her, so Marinette doing something that these parts of the fandom don’t like can cause a volatile reaction.

Might also involve how people, such as myself, go rather easy on Marinette since we feel she’s been through more than enough due to the narrative, which can cause Marinette’s detractors to pendulum swing in the other direction. I understand it even though I don’t agree with it (it’s why I try to have an opinion separate to what the fandom views anything as).

Continuing on, I don’t care for moments where Marinette is portrayed to be hostile or out-of-character for the sake of putting her down or having someone call her out. If there’s something that needs to be corrected in terms of Marinette’s personality, then no one should need to force Marinette into it. Most things can be played out naturally if given enough thought.

Certain areas of the fandom can sometimes treat Marinette like a blank slate, and that likely comes from the fact that Marinette can be a little bit of everything. She can be cheerful, bitter, punny, angry, and even mischievous, but that can cause some issues over which side of her people choose to use for a story, instead of trying to include all sides.

Saltinette/Pettinette is an exception because those are concepts used to create a sense of closure and satisfaction. They’re not for accuracy; they’re for the sake of catharsis and “fixing what’s broken.” Marinette isn’t supposed to act the way she does normally.

As for the writers… well, there’s a slew of things I could choose from, but I think I’m going to have to go with how they fixate on the wrong issues.

It’s really unhealthy and is clearly sending a lot of bad messages to Marinette (unintentionally because the writers very likely don’t notice it, but the narrative is oddly good at showing the progression). I don’t have to wonder why most of her problems fail to get solved, because the show does things like scolding her for “lying” rather than the fact that she panicked, which is what caused that lie in the first place.

Other characters do things like forcing her into the situation when she’s not ready instead of learning that this clearly isn’t working and focusing on her actual problems. A few times is fine because each friend could shrug it off as “she just needs to get used to it,” but it’s been clear for at least a season that every attempt using that logic has failed.

Essentially, instead of “Marinette can’t talk to Adrien -> Why can’t Marinette talk to Adrien? -> Make that issue easier to deal with,” it’s, “Marinette can’t talk to Adrien -> Force her to try anyway.”

This creates a snowball effect. The more Marinette messes up and thus embarrasses herself, the more anxious she’s going to get. The more they scold Marinette on problems that aren’t the main problem, it’ll make Marinette feel even worse when she makes the same mistake again because that main problem was never addressed.

It just looks bad on the people trying to teach Marinette these things when it continuously fails and they’re too stupid/oblivious/proud to realize that they need to change it up.

okay let’s get something straight:

pride is not for everyone. pride is for LGBTQ people, and LGBTQ people
only.
pride is open to everyone, yes. allies and non LGBTQ people who want to support the community are absolutely welcomed and encouraged to participate, yes. but it is not for you.

it is still only for the LGBTQ community. and this is something that some cishet people need to learn.

pride is open to everyone. it is not for everyone. there is a difference.

my professor just dropped this bomb:

“when i lived in san diego in the 1970s i would just pick up mexicans who were sneaking over the border and get them past border control because no one suspects a nerdy-looking jewish guy with a brooklyn accent of aiding in illegal immigration”

Nice to see radical Tumblr literally condoning bringing potential criminals into their country.

seelcudoom

“potential criminals” literally just means a person you dumb shit, literally everyone is a potential criminal, so unless you have enough evidence to bumb that up to “suspected” or “proven” criminal you should just treat them like a person because thats what they fucking are
