I’ve seen a couple of Voltron Avatar AUs, and overwhelmingly the consensus is firebender Keith (which makes sense, considering his element, and the galra) but if I’m going to split hairs here: a significant part of Keith’s character is there’s a lot of his history and himself that he doesn’t know, and I take a little issue with the idea of Keith being overtly raised in the fire nation. 

Now that’s not to say you couldn’t swing it, but consider: 

Keith who grew up in Earth Nation and has always just figured he’s a nonbender because he’s clearly no earthbender. And per canon he’s an orphan so it isn’t as if he can reference with anyone.

Keith who’s kind of the team Sokka except instead of the boomerang guy in the middle of all of these elemental wielders he’s the sword guy for a long time. (and I like the idea of nonbender Coran as well so, hey, solidarity is exciting) and then the first time he firebends nobody is more confused than Keith. 

Bonus points: Keith even after the revelation forgetting he is a firebender. Several times. “What do you mean we can’t start a campfire?” “I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but it’s pouring rain outside. All the firewood I could find is wet, we have to wait for it to dry.” “can’t you just-” “…oh. Yeah. right.”

Which happens to have the strongest bond/connection with Lance

What if Lance was meant to pilot the lion, but Keith also has some sort of connection to it too? He felt an energy telling him to search, but Lance had the official bond.

Keith was questioning Coran about the lion in season two, he was wondering how it had gotten to Earth and if a Galra had possibly piloted it. COULD THAT BE TRUE, AND COULD THE PILOT HAVE BEEN RELATED TO KEITH WHICH IS WHY HE FELT AN ENERGY TOWARDS IT? 

And look at when Keith approaches the lion before Lance…UMMM

WHAT?? TELL ME THAT DOESN’T MEAN SOMETHING. 

IS IT POSSIBLE THAT TWO PEOPLE COULD BE TIED TO THE BLUE LION????

WERE LANCE AND KEITH MEANT TO FIND THE LION TOGETHER JUST LIKE THE CAVE PAINTINGS SAID??? Keith felt the energy which led them to that spot and Lance’s connection led them to retrieving the lion, which is what started Voltron in the first place.

the first 3 caps are from S1, during the bonding/training exercises, coran directing them with advice like “the paladin code demands you put your team members’ safety above your own!” and “protect your teammates, or no one will be there to protect you!”

the remaining 7 caps are from S2, and while keith and lance still sometimes rile each other up or try to outdo each other, i think these moments prove how much better they’re becoming at watching out for each other and keeping each other safe. the elevator scene has gotten a lot of focus, perhaps because of its prolonged focus on their teamwork, but i think smaller moments like these do a lot in the long run to provide foundation for future bigger moments. you could consider them examples of subtle showing, not just telling, that will make their future scenes as a good team/partnership all the more effective and believable! their rivalry is a lot of fun and i doubt it will ever go away completely, but it can be balanced into something more mutually helpful that doesn’t end with getting too caught up in bickering and crashing and burning.
