Anonymous asked:

hi, i was curious, what's your fic writing process? how do you go from idea to a finished, multi-chaptered piece? as someone who is definitely more of an artist than a writer, it's really hard for me to write anything beyond the premise and set up of the story. thanks!

i am…. possibly the wrong person to ask about finished multichapter pieces, so take answers with a grain of salt :DDD;;

generally, i have an idea that i bounce around in my head for a while, not really a story, per se, but a line or an exchange between two characters or a pose/picture, and then i think about how i could get to that point, and what background information i need to give for that little snippet to make sense. usually, i write up to that point, and then i keep writing until an opportunity to close the scene presents itself, although sometimes i have a bit of trouble with that.

for multichaptered fics, or fics with multiple scenes, i try to know ahead of time what snippet of inspiration i’m working towards for every scene, and write down key phrases to remind myself of that inspiration.

my outline for secret valentine looked like this:

2. Ladrien, tree
adrien happens upon ladybug staked out in a tree (points out something for her)
DONE

3. Ladrien anddddd… Eating? Haha <3
-ladybug brings baked goods as thanks
DONE

6. ladrien lamp :)
-adrien invites her in
DONE

[etc etc etc- there were another seven scenes after this]

sometimes this method fails me (when i forget to put a point into the scene i’m writing or can’t figure out where to stop or where to start) but normally it works fairly well for me.

i’ve found my muse doesn’t like being ‘tied down’ much more than this, so ‘they did this and then they did that’ kinds of outlines haven’t worked well for me in the past, and neither have ‘they need to get from point a to point b’ kinds of outlines, because those are just so boring they kill my interest in the story entirely. there has to be something i want to write in every scene, or it’s a no-go.

re: not getting past the startup: i’ve had this problem a lot, and all i can say is: try to plan it out to a point where you can see yourself writing the whole thing and don’t bite off more than you can chew. i do a lot of oneshots for this reason, because i know i can finish what i set out to do.

this is what works for me for multichapters, although you might try a bunch of different ones to see what works for you?

i know some people like more thorough outlines, and some people don’t like using outlines at all. everyone is a little bit different; this is just what i’ve found works for me, after a bit of experimenting.

thanks for asking! this was super fun to answer please let me know if you want clarification/expansoin on anything? hallie speaks anon answered
