marichat4lyf asked:

"Do you think we should ever stop doing this?" With marichat plz! <3Luna

Sorry this took SO. FREAKING. LONG. These months have not been kind to my mental health. But I finally found some time and sanity to work on these again.

“Do you think we should ever stop doing this?” Marinette asked quietly, tightening her hold on the boy sitting on the patio chair underneath her.

“The superhero in me knows that I should stop visiting so often,” Chat Noir responded. “It’s not safe to visit like this. If Hawkmoth were to ever find out, akumas would be targeting you left and right.”

“But?” the girl said, sensing his hesitance.

The boy sighed. “But… is it wrong to be a little irresponsible every once in a while? I mean, I follow the rules most of the time in my civilian life, I haven’t told anyone my identity, I always help Ladybug beat akumas, even when we’re at odds. Shouldn’t I be allowed to bend the rules just a little bit?”

He squeezed the girl laying on his chest slightly tighter.

“It’s bad enough that I can’t see my civilian friends anymore. I shouldn’t have to give up the one friend I have in this form.”

“What about Ladybug?” Marinette questioned. “Isn’t she your friend?”

“Yeah,” Chat Noir shrugged. “But it’s not like she’s often out and about. And she’s too responsible to stay out some extra time after patrol.”

Marinette frowned. “I just don’t understand why you can’t see your civilian friends anymore…”

“I have an overprotective parent who’s gotten extra protective lately,” he muttered.

“Hm,” The girl thought. “I have a friend with a parent like that too. We haven’t seen him since his father decided school was too dangerous, with so many akumas happening in it.” She sighed. “I miss him.”

“I bet he misses you too,” Chat Noir whispered, laying his cheek on the crown of her head.

The two of them laid quietly, holding on to the warmth of each other for as long as they could. Chat Noir had been doing these visits for several months already, but on that day, Marinette had almost fallen from a rooftop because of an akuma. If it hadn’t been for her partner’s unexpectedly rash reaction, someone would have been scraping her from the pavement.

A sudden risky move he made, while yelling out her name, in a way he had never done for Ladybug.

“I don’t wanna lose you.”

Marinette blinked. Had he really said that, or had that been her imagination? She rose up to look him in the eyes, which were averted towards their now joining hands.

“Chat—”

“You’re the single, most important person to me right now,” he continued, still not raising his gaze.

“C’mon Chat, I’m sure your friends still care—”

“That’s not what I mean…”

The girl gulped, just as her heart did one of those pesky summersaults that had been bothering her for weeks already.

“What do you mean, then?”

Chat Noir hesitated, until finally letting out what sounded like a defeated sigh. He then proceeded to give her the fakest smile she had ever seen come from him.

“It’s nothing, Princess,” he said, his teeth almost gritting.

It wasn’t nothing. Marinette had never seen it clearer. There was something he was afraid to tell her. She just knew it. Could it be the thing she hoped he would say? The reason her heart continued to make leaps and bounds every time he said her name, or touched her hand? Or was that only wishful thinking?

But most importantly: did she dare to ask again, and if she did, would she get the answer she wanted?

“Chat Noir—”

“Really, it’s nothing,” he reaffirmed, averting his eyes once more.

Marinette bit her lip, trying to decide if to do something about it, or not. As she saw his face of resignation, the girl pulled all the courage she could muster and leaned in to kiss his cheek. As her lips brush his cold skin, she could have sworn to have heard his breath hitch.

She pulled back and was welcomed by Chat Noir’s gaping features.

“You know,” she grinned, feeling more confident than thirty seconds before. “Whatever it is that you mean, you can tell me when you’re ready.”

The boy’s open mouth slowly turned into a lopsided grin.

“I’ll make sure to remember that.”
