Vintage Misery

———ACT 2———-

Its been a while now. Judy watches outside the window as the farm and the manse disappear from sight. She was going away from her home and family. She only knew of the farm but nothing else from outside. She wonders where could they be headed, what will she see? More importantly why is that scary fox, Nicholas Wilde thought it would be best for her to be with him in the same cab and not with the other cab the slaves were in? She was hesitant to say anything. As she remembers from experience, foxes or other nobles don’t like being conversed by petty slaves like her. She thought remaining silent would be best but when she made a request about saying a last goodbye to her parents, he didn’t hesitated to answer, nor was he cruel to reject such thing. But she just can’t tell whether or not it would be wise to ask.

Nick notices her discomfort through her face, he begins to wonder if she’s scared or want to go back with her family. Although it would be possible to return her back to the farm with her family it also would be hard for her. After all Gideon is a cruel master to his slaves. Nick knew of these since he was making fun of them in his party he was invited in. Nick was never a party animal but its the only way to get to know other nobles. Even though they are scared of even approaching him. Nick doesn’t know what to do with her, since he never owned a slave before. He decided to talk first.

Nick: “So what is it?”

Judy: “Hmm?”

Nick: “What is it you want to say?”

Judy: “I don’t have anything to say sir.”

Nick: “Don’t be modest, I’d like to know you a bit better.”

Judy: “Well I don’t know what to say sir.”

Nick: “Just tell me what it is your thinking about. Any questions you want to ask just say it.”

Judy: “Well I don’t know, um, there seems to be a lot of questions I want to ask about. Like why would my parents suddenly tell me to go?Who are you? And why am I riding in the same cab with you?”

Nick: “Alright I’ll tell you. Your parents probably thought that you being able to get away from that place is the best course of action so that you wouldn’t have to suffer Gideon for the rest of your days. Second I’m a tax-collector, my name is Nicholas Wilde, however in the future address me as Sir or Mr. Wilde, not as master or any of that. Third I own you now and you’ll be my assistant or maid, as I mentioned earlier when we were walking across the fields, that’s why you’re riding with me.”

There was another reason why but Nick couldn’t explain it. A curiosity? or did he took a liking to this rabbit? He still could not tell what it is.

Judy: “But I thought that I was going to be sold. I also heard that you don’t take slaves.”

Nick: “I don’t but- I can’t quite tell why I did that. Maybe because I got curious about you.”

Judy: “What is there to know? I’m just a petty slave.”

Nick: “Not the way I see it.”

Judy didn’t know what it is he sees about her but since she was given permission to ask, she then let out one more question that she’s been wanting to ask.

Judy: “If you can, could you buy my family from the farm?”

Nick: “I could but only if Gideon sells them.”

Judy: “You can’t just take them?”

Nick: “No they have to be in sale before I could buy them.”

Judy: “What?”

Nick: “As of now Gideon owns them and without his permission I wont be able to buy them until he decides to sell them off.”

Judy’s heart sank, saddened by the fact that she’s the only one to get away from that farm. She always hoped that they would be freed together and live a happy life elsewhere. Not be separated from each other.

Judy: “So there’s no way I could see them anymore.”

Nick: “No, but I promise you that if he does decide to sell them, I’ll buy them for you.”

Judy couldn’t believe what he just said. He’ll buy them off for her? What kindness is this? She never could have expected it from a noble, much less from a fox.

Judy: “You’ll do that for me, sir?”

Nick: “Yes.”

Judy: “Why?”

Nick: “Families should always stay together. That’s what I believe.”

What a heartfelt reply. She stared at him who is just looking outside the window. She wonders what kind of fox is Mr. Wilde? She has never met an animal like him before. She hardly met any other animal besides the ones from that farm. Not only that what kind of world is it outside the farm? All this sparked her curiosity.

———————————————————————–

An hour later they have arrived at the town. Judy looked outside of the window amazed from what she sees. She has never been outside the farm ever. She’s only heard of towns like these from the other slaves. She was born and raised in that farm so she never knew of the world. Nick sees her widened expression seeing that this is all new to her.

Nick: “have you ever been outside the farm?”

Judy: “No I haven’t sir. I was born and raised on that farm. Its the only place i knew.”

Nick felt pity for her. What kind of sad life is that? And for how long? He never owned a slave nor did he even care about their experience or life stories but just hearing that made him feel great pity.

Nick: “Well how about this, next time I’ll show you around town.”

Judy: “Really sir!?”

Nick: “Why yes.”

Judy: “How can I repay this kindness?”

Nick: “Don’t worry about it.”

Then something crossed her eyes. The slave market. it was the place that they were heading. She saw all different kinds of slaves. All of them were prey just as she heard from her parents. From the smallest mice to a sheep. She was also surprised that some animals who were herbivores were also buying slaves with the carnivores.. The large elephant just bought two rabbits and a Buffalo bought a group of mice. She was shocked then Nick pulled the curtains on her side.

Nick: “You didn’t need to see that.”

She wonders what would happen to the other slaves in the other carriage.

They have arrived at their destination.

Nick: “Alright lets go.”

Judy follows him outside and see a crowd of slaves coming out of a ship. She has never seen an actual ship only heard of. It was huge! She stood in awe of the size of it.

Nick: “Come on Judy.”

Judy: “Oh sorry sir!”

She hurriedly went to his side. She also sees the other cab with the other slaves being taken out. She wonders what is gonna happen to them. Well she already knew that they were going to be sold but still.

Just ahead of them, there seems to be a craggy hyena on a booth who is barking orders to the crew of the ship.

Nick: “Hello there Capt. Oak.”

Capt. Oak: “Well isn’t this a surprise! I thought I never see the day that you’ll ever come here to the slave market! Oh wait are you here for the taxes? Because I already paid my share!”

Nick: “Yes I know you did, and no I’m not here to buy slaves, but to sell some.”

Capt. Oak: “Well then let me see the merchandise!”

The hyena was quite loud and lively for a slave trader. Judy thought of a slave traders as just as cruel as her former master but that changed when she saw him, a friendly loud hyena with sharp fangs and a peg leg. He was conversing with Nick with such a lively and friendly tone but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t be just as cruel. The captain began to inspect the rabbits from the cab.

Capt. Oak: “Oh these are fine slaves! Where on earth did you get these rabbits?”

Nick: “Someone by the name of Gideon couldn’t pay his taxes and decided to sell his own slaves as payment, including some accessories.”

Capt. Oak: “These muttons will be sold off on higher price for sure!”

Nick: “So can you buy them off me? I’ll sell to you for $2,500”

Capt. Oak: “Thats quite cheap for these muttons! Well of course! I wont turn this kind of offer! But are you sure? I can pay more for them ya know.”

Nick: “I only need the necessities but I’ll just raise it by $500, hows that?”

Capt. Oak: “Yar har har!! Is that all? Well since you’re quite generous I’ll take the offer!!”

Nick: “Alright just take good care of them.”

Capt. Oak: “Oh I will for sure!! I will keep them clean and well fed that I promise you lad!”

Nick: “Alright then.”

Capt. Oak then grabs his pockets and pays Nick with some papers he needs to fill. As he’s doing that Capt. Oak notices a rabbit clinging on his side.

Capt. Oak: “Uh.. Nicky who is that little fluff clinging on your side?”

Nick: “Oh that’s my new assistant.”

Capt. Oak.: “An assistant? I never could have guessed! Nicholas Wilde, the nightmare of nobles needing an assistant! ”

Nick: “Well things do get tiring from time to time.”

Capt. Oak: “Aye I could understand what ye mean lad.”

Nick: “Well here are the papers.”

Capt. Oak: “And here’s yer silver and gold mate.”

Nick: “Pleasure doing business with you.”

Capt. Oak: “And to you too lad. Alright ye muttons follow me!”

Capt. Oak then lets the rabbits off the chains and leads them in to his ship.

Judy: “Are they going to be ok sir?”

Nick: “Capt. Oak is a fine captain who takes care of his merchandise even slaves. Don’t worry they wont be treated harshly, he will give them a bed, some clothes on their back and bring them food everyday. He’s not a cruel animal, far from it the slaves that he owns are well cared. Now come on we got to go and sell that painting and vase to a pawn shop.”

Judy felt at ease knowing that they would be taken care of. Then something unexpected happened, her stomach growled.

Nick: “Are you hungry?”

Judy was too embarrassed to say anything.

Nick: “Why don’t we get something to eat?”

Judy agrees to it and so they went off to buy some bread at the bakery. Judy ate the soft bread with such glee. Nick was happy seeing her smile.

Judy: “These bread are great!”

Nick: “They’re not that great.”

Judy: “But it is sir! Its soft and fills your mouth with–mmm!”

Nick: “What do you usually eat?”

Judy: “Just some vegetables recipes that my mother makes everyday.”

Nick: “Is that all?”

Judy: “Just those. We do get different kinds of bread every once in awhile but they were all solid not as soft as these.”

Nick knew that slaves are not well treated by some masters. He was glad he got her out of that place. Now he thinks about it, he owns her so he could show her new things, new foods, new places, and a new life all together. He then questioned himself, why is he doing all this for this rabbit? He looks at her adorably munching her bread. He still wonders why he feels so happy just looking at her.

They made a stop at the pawn shop and sold the painting and the vase. Nick said farewell to the two bears who assisted him this day and waved goodbye. Now it was just him and Judy.

Nick: “Alright I got the money for today, were heading home.”

Judy: “Home?”

Nick: “My home.”

The carriage passes by a small manse with a black iron gate, with a dead tree and withering grass. It was all white, lifeless could be used to describe the place. Judy wonders what kind of home is this. It felt dead. On the front door there was a large mole waiting for them.

Nick: “Sorry if I’m late Dr. Cain”

Dr. Cain: “Oh don’t worry about it, I was the one who came here early.”

Nick: “Well then lets get inside.”

Dr. Cain: “And who is that?”

Nick: “That’s my new assistant.”

Dr.Cain: “A slave?”

Nick: “Sort of.”

Dr. Cain: “I thought you don’t take slaves.”

Nick: “I don’t. I told you she’s my assistant.”

Dr.Cain: “Oh well lets just get inside, its cold out.”

Nick opens the door and much to Judy’s surprise there was also nothing much inside. She expected to see some lavishly decorated halls with glamorous paintings and a nice atmosphere but there was not even a single thing that stood out. Everything looked plain.

Dr.Cain: “You should really decorate your house.”

Nick: “I find it unnecessary. ”

Dr.Cain: “For a noble you sure are the most simplified of them all.”

Nick: “Lets just get on with the check up. Oh and Judy, wait over there in the living room.”

Nick and Dr.Cain went to the kitchen where she got her stethoscope.

Dr.Cain: “Alright remove your shirt and turn around.”

Nick took of his coat and shirt. Dr.Cain listened to his back for his heartbeat and breathing. Judy can see them from across the room. She wonders what’s going on.

Dr.Cain: “Well it certainly hasn’t gotten any worse nor it has gotten any better. Are you still taking the medicine?”

Nick: “I do its just sometimes I forget.”

Dr.Cain: “You need to take this medicine everyday Nick.”

Nick: “I will.”

Dr.Cain: “Perhaps your new assistant could remind you everyday.”

Nick: “Well that’s one thing I could order her to do”

Dr.Cain: “So tell me why would you take a slave? You never liked the idea.”

Nick: “I just thought I could probably need some assistance every now and then.”

Dr.Cain: “So living here all alone has finally taken its toll hasn’t it?”

Nick: “Could be.”

Dr.Cain: “Well just treat her well. I don’t want anymore nasty rumors about you spreading around town.”

Nick: “Rumors are rumors nothing more.”

Dr.Cain: “Keep it that way. Alright so were done here, just remember to take your medicine.”

Nick: “I will.”

Nick put his clothes back on. Judy being curious she was snooping right outside the kitchen. Dr.Cain notices.

Dr.Cain: “Oh hello dear.”

Judy: “Hello m’am”

Dr.Cain: “Come here don’t be shy.”

Nick: “What are you doing here?”

Judy: “I-Im sorry, my curiosity got the best of me I promise not to do that again so please don’t hurt me!”

Nick: “I’m not gonna hurt you, I would never do that.”

Dr.Cain: “Mr. Wilde here is not a very violent person, Judy was it?”

Judy: “Y-yes.”

Dr.Cain: “Nick buy this sweet girl some new clothes. She can’t keep looking all ragged like this.”

Nick: “I was just planning on doing so.”

Dr.Cain: “Well I bid you two farewell.”

Nick walked Dr.Cain to the door and said goodbye. Nick then turns around to her with a different expression. He looks at her with a glare, it was kind of scaring her. Then he spoke.

Nick: “So we’ll have to buy you some new clothes and other things. I will show you to your room. come.”

Judy followed Nick up the stairs and showed her the room she’ll be staying at. It was spacious, it was just as big as her family’s cabin and this was just the bedroom!

Nick: “This room was never used so I’m giving it to you. My room is just right across from here.”

His room was placed on the opposite side of where her door was facing.

Judy: “So I get to live in the manse as you do sir?”

Nick: “Well yes are you not ok with that?”

Judy: “No its fine! I’m grateful for everything, its just that I’ve never stayed in this kind of place before. I always have lived in quite small house and a shared bed.”

Nick: “So you want to share the bed with me?”

Judy’s face went red from the question. She was flustered from the thought of it.

Judy: “Wh-what! I-I would never do such a thing! I don’t want to intrude—–! ”

Nick was just smiling seeing how funny her reaction was and how she just kept on rambling on and on. He couldn’t help but laugh. Judy stopped and was dumbfounded why he was laughing.

Nick: “Hahahahahaha! You’re quite the laugh whiskers ahahahahaha!”

Judy didn’t get it but she was glad seeing him laugh whole heartedly and they both just laughed on and on about nothing really.

Nick: “Ok ahaha, lets go the shopping district. Its time I got you some new clothes.”

Judy: “Thank you so much for everything sir.”

Nick: “When were alone in this house I want you to address me by my name ok?”
