67. “Of all the people I could’ve gotten stuck in an elevator with and it just had to be you.”
“Well, excuse me,” Kim snorted, leaning back with his arms crossed. “Do I need to find a time machine so that I could have let the other guy get in before me?”
“Yes.”
He shook his head. “Yeah, but not a chance.”
Ignoring him, Alix stabbed the com button with a finger, and a male voice crackled through.
“How can I help you?”
“Hello, yeah, the elevator here just died at floor number,” she glanced up. “Four and I would appreciate it if you send someone to get me out.”
“Is there someone else with you, miss?”
“Get us out,” Kim interjected, coming to stand behind her. He ignored the glare she shot at him as he continued to talk. “And yes, there’s someone else with her right now. We would really appreciate it if you come and get us.”
There was some shuffling at the other side of the line before the man started talking again. “We’ll be there as soon as we can.”
Before they could say anything more, the line went dead.
Kim took a step back. “Well, that was reassuring.”
Groaning, Alix rub her eyes with the heel of her hand, the other one holding onto a paper bag. “I can’t believe I’m stuck in an elevator with you.”
“Yeah, well, we can’t always get what we want.” He snorted.
She glared at him. “What are you doing here, anyway?”
“You’re not the only one wanting to visit Miss Bustier, you know,” he huffed, crossing his arms as he leaned on the wall of the elevator. “I happened to be a student of hers too, in case you haven’t notice.”
“How couldn’t I,” she bit out sarcastically. “When you keep yapping a couple of seats back for the past few years and doing nothing but grating not only on Ivan’s nerves, but mine too.”
He raised an eyebrow at her. “Why are you so angry at me?”
“I’m always angry at you, Hercules, get use to it.”
“No, but you’ve been extra,” he stopped when she arched an eyebrow defiantly, daring him to say the word he was thinking. “Bitchy,” he smirked. There, he said it. “And I know it’s been directed to me lately. So, spit it out and tell me what the hell did I do this time.”
“Or what, Meathead?” She taunted, propping her hands onto her hips. “You’re going to make me tell you? Oh, please-”
“Ha!” He pointed towards her that she was startled for a moment. “You are mad at me. Come on, Tinkerbell, we’re usually straight forward with each other, your passive aggressive attitude threw me off for the past few days, and now that we’re face to face, you’re being aggressive than usual.”
She opened her mouth in disbelief, before she snapped it close as she glared at him. “I’m being aggressive than usual? What do you expect when you’re stuck with an idiot in a hospital elevator? And I wasn’t being passive aggressive.”
He snorted, rolling his eyes. “Yeah, sure you weren’t. Because everytime I’ll ask a question, you couldn’t even look at me in the eye and answer me. Which, by the way, is very rude.”
“It sucks when I don’t even answer your calls, doesn’t it?” she hissed. “Have you ever thought how I felt when you did that to me?”
Kim stared at her in confusion. “What are you talking about? I’ll always answer-”
“Cut the crap, Kim,” she leaned against the opposite wall of the elevator. “Remember two weeks ago when you promised me we’ll go rollerblading? Yeah, you didn’t show up. And when you told me to wait for you at the cafe because you needed to borrow some notes? I did, for two goddamn hours that in the end I left because I had better things to do than doing nothing.”
He blinked at her in surprise. “Is this what it is? I told you, I was out with Max-”
“I don’t care where you’ve been,” she snapped. “What I don’t appreciate is that you made me waste my time, you sag of rotten meat, and even had the guts to stand up on me later,” she threw her hands in the air. “What the hell, Kim?”
He sighed. “Alix, look, I’m sorry, okay? I didn’t really mean it.”
“Oh really?” she scoffed. “Then, what’s with the incident of you ditching me at the mall just because you were chasing after some chick? You could have called me and told me so that I wouldn’t have to search for your damn ass. What’s the use of a cellphone if you’re not using it the way you’re supposed to use it?”
“Wait,” he scrutinised her. “Are you jealous?”
She threw her arms up in exasperation. “Are you kidding me? I told you all of that and the only thing that went through your kelp mind was that I’m jealous? What is wrong with you?”
“Well, when I was out with Max, you exploded. When I was trying to help the lady find her son, you exploded. What am I supposed to think, Alix?”
“That you should keep your damn promises, for god’s sake,” Then, the elevator jerked to a start that she had to held onto the wall to maintain her balance. She sighed, all the anger drained out when it started moving. “Whatever, Kim, do what you want.”
He reached for her, eyes wide with panic. “Alix-”
She didn’t even wait for the doors to open fully when they stopped at level eight, quickly slipping through before she stalked her way through the corridor, the paper bag almost crumpled in her fist.

88. “Don’t panic but I think we might have accidentally gotten married… ”
People were congratulating her.
Marinette didn’t know why, but this was like, what, the fifth time? Since the first time it happened, someone beamed from afar and actually jogged up towards her to give a quick, “Hey, congratulations!” before walking away merrily, leaving the young woman to gape after them in utter confusion because.
What in the world was that for?
As she was walking back towards the bakery -mind whirling with thoughts of her accomplishments throughout her twenty-three years of living that could be considered as worthy enough to get the attention of Paris because honestly? She couldn’t think of one that could be that amazing- she saw Adrien walking briskly towards the same destination, his face set with worry as he clutched a magazine in his hand.
Slightly alarmed at his expression and how she felt that it was directed towards her, she hastened her pace, nearly slamming the door open when she saw him talking pleasantly with her mother at the counter, his back towards her. Then, Sabine saw her and called her over. “Marinette! Adrien wants to see you.”
Said person turned around and gave her a smile, but she saw the way it was quite forced through the edges, and she narrowed her eyes slightly towards him in suspicion. “Hey, Marinette, do you think I could talk to you for a while?”
Alone, his eyes seemed to scream, and she guessed that if he was in his suit, his tail would have lashed in agitation.
Marinette nodded, amused at how he let out a small sigh of relief. “Sure thing, do you want talk about it over coffee?”
He grinned, holding out his arm with the magazine in hand. “My treat.”
“See you later, Maman!” she called towards her mother, before the two made their way out.
“So, what’s this about?” she asked the moment they started walking towards a nearby cafe just a few blocks away. “You seem quite nervous, kitty.”
He cleared his throat slightly, patting her hand in reassurance. “We’ll sit down and I’ll tell you.”
When they got in, he quickly ushered her towards the corner of the shop, and she saw the people inside took note of their presence by the way they lit up. They were muttering more congratulations towards them as Adrien gave a polite smile and thank you, one hand resting on one small part of her back as he guided her towards a seat. Marinette, who was alarmed at the beginning, was flabbergasted at this point when they sat down.
“I don’t know why,” she began slowly, warily eyeing the toothy grin an old woman was giving them behind him. “But people keep giving me these looks as if I just blessed them with unlimited money. I don’t know what caused that and it’s mildly freaking me out.”
Adrien chuckled nervously, rubbing the back of his head. “Yeah,” he drawled. “About that. I may have something to do with it.”
She narrowed her eyes in suspicion. “What did you do?”
“Before that, promise me you won’t freak out, My Lady, and not be angry at me.” He interjected quickly.
“Adrien.” She warned.
He took a deep breath. “Okay,” he straightened the crinkled magazine on the table. “This is why.”
The moment her eyes landed on the headlines, she could feel the earth stop for a while.
“Don’t panic but I think we might have accidentally gotten married.”
Of all the terrible scenarios she played in her head that could be count as absolutely terrible this wasn’t it.
“How did you screw up this bad?” she asked in disbelief as she began to quickly paged through the magazine, beating down the flush that threatened to burst with a large, giant stick. “And what made they think we’re married?”
He took a breath, lowering his voice as he leaned forward slightly. “Okay, so, remember that fake ring I gave you when we were in lycée after we found out each other’s identities?”
She raised an eyebrow at him. “The one where you said that I’ll always remember you by wearing that sapphire stone ring?” He shifted in his seat, clearing his throat in embarrassment. “And, by the way, it’s not fake. I can’t believe you lied to me-”
“And I’m really sorry about that,” he apologised, sounding not sorry at all that she rolled her eyes before reading the article. “Yeah, well, the ring is a culprit and now people think we’re married.”
“It is a real ring,” she pointed out as she glanced at him briefly. “But I can’t totally blame you for this-”
His jaw dropped. “You were going to blame me? I’m hurt, My Lady.”
“-but it’s mostly my fault,” she continued, wincing. “I shouldn’t have worn that when we were on our date.”
He hummed, leaning back on his chair. “True, but you have to admit that it’s a nice ring, brings out your eyes,” he grinned when she buried her head into the magazine with a huff. “Aw, My Lady is suddenly shy in front of me, how cute.”
She rolled her eyes. “Whatever, kitty. But we’re still in this mess. What are we going to do?”
He shrugged. “Elope?”
“Excuse me?”
Surprised, both of them faced the voice behind him and saw two old women smiling at them with the corner of their eyes crinkling. “I can’t help but overhearing,” one of them with glasses dangling around her neck started. “But is it true that the marriage is false?”
Adrien flashed her his most charming smile as he swung his arm on the back of the chair. “It’s true.”
“I see,” she seemed to hummed in thought. “I also heard that you revealed your identities to each other,” Marinette felt her heart jumped when the old woman began to lean forward, as if sharing a secret as the tone of her voice dropped. “Are you two from a strip club?”
Marinette had never thought her face would explode so easily at that moment.
Adrien looked uneasy too, a streak of red gracing his face that she wanted to bury herself into the magazine and never come out. “Oh, um,” he cleared his throat, wringing his fingers together before he let out a breath of laughter. “Uh, no, we’re not-”
“Julie!” The other old woman scolded. “It’s not nice asking such things to the young couple, let them be.”
“Oh dear,” Julie cover her mouth with her hand. “I am terribly sorry! I didn’t know what came over me,” she laughed, where the two partners joined in weakly. “Silly me, continue with what you’re doing, don’t mind an old cow such as myself.”
Adrien nodded, smiling at them politely. “Thank you.”
When he faced towards Marinette again, she set aside the magazine on the table as he buried his face into his hands with a heavy exhale. “Well,” she began weakly. “Could have been worse.”
He propped his chin onto his fists. “I don’t know if keeping our identities is worth all of this.” He mumbled.
“Note to self,” she mimicked his posture. “Never wear any jewellery when we’re going out, or rings for that matter.”
He nodded. “Deal.”
