can you believe my stream was so slow and laggy that it completely skipped over this part? i thought adrien just went and sat back down and that was all

this sequence speaks volumes, though! you’d think after fifteen years of hands-off parenting adrien would be used to his dad not showing up for things, but clearly he’s still very vulnerable to it. it didn’t even sound like he got a solid no, either, his calls were just ignored. 

look at the way adrien sits - he’s curled in and defensive, shielding himself, but when nino reaches out to him he unfurls a little bit again. he trusts nino so much; he knows he’s someone who isn’t going to hurt or disappoint him; he’s someone safe for adrien. there’s the physical contact between them, too, which directly contrasts adrien and gabriel’s relationship because gabriel is never there. nino’s assuring adrien he is there, and he’s not about to go anywhere while he’s still needed.

and again, there’s the fact nino and adrien have known each other less than a year (given that adrien must have only started school that year) - adrien’s probably been keeping these emotions bottled up for years because he was never told it was okay to express them. nino’s sympathy offers support and lets adrien know he’s justified in being upset. the way he opens up when nino touches him shows he wasn’t sure about displaying his vulnerable side before, that he’s still not sure about it, but nino’s prompting him to share so he trusts that.

and man, nino. we’ve seen him be supportive already in episode 2, but he’s still right there ready to sympathise when adrien gets screwed over by his dad again - he even stops filming the class presentations as soon as he picks up on adrien being upset and switches his attention entirely to him instead. look at him in the third cap when adrien’s about to sit down; he’s genuinely shattered that adrien’s gone through this again - the way nino eases from shock into sad resignation probably means adrien was really excited about doing a talk with his dad and was certain he’d be coming. there’s that moment on nino’s end of “oh god, i can’t believe he’s done it again”.

i really love the consistency between episodes; nino being the Ultimate Emotional Support Buddy wasn’t just a one-off plotline. it’s not obligatory “oh my friend is sad” support, either - he cares for adrien so much and that’s really clear; and it’s equally clear how his support is affecting adrien and helping him express himself with less fear and reserve.

nino is just really, really, really important, and i’m so narked my stream skipped this part entirely and made me think no development came out of adrien’s dad ignoring him again.
