On Gabriel’s relationship with Adrien:

hallowedhorrors

So in Jackady, we seen a couple things that, on the surface, gave the impression that Gabriel isn’t quite as detached from Adrien as we’d all been worried he was. For all that they have an awful relationship due to Gabriel’s neglect and control issues, we were given indication here that he at least cares about and is fond of Adrien on some level, right?

image

But, honestly? I’m even more concerned now than I was before.

This is the most screentime we’ve ever had with Gabriel– More or less the only significant screentime we’ve gotten with him at all. It’s the best insight we’ve had into his personality and mannerisms, into what one might call ‘Typical Gabriel’. And in a span of literally 3 minutes, we see him compare Adrien to Mama Agreste twice (though, given, he didn’t know it was Adrien the second time).

And this right here?

image

This is the look of a kid in pain from a comment that he probably hears a lot. Possibly because he hears it a lot.

Maybe I’m being cynical here, but to me, this episode came with the message that Gabriel only really values Adrien on a superficial level– Not as a person, or as his son, or as a generally good kid who’s ridiculously multi-talented… but merely as something that serves as a reminder of his wife.

Gabriel can’t be bothered to spend time with Adrien. He doesn’t appear at all invested in whether or not his son is mentally/emotionally healthy, let alone happy. But man, he sure does love to look at Adrien, doesn’t he? Gabriel’s the one who put Adrien into modeling, and the one who specifically makes it a priority in Adrien’s schedule. He’s got at least one wall of nothing but poster-size pictures of him.

image

But any of Adrien’s actual ACCOMPLISHMENTS? It seems like Gabriel couldn’t really care less about those; Adrien’s trophies and stuff are all in his room, where nobody but Adrien himself ever sees them. One would expect that Gabriel would want to put things like that on display somewhere, if he’s so prideful of Adrien. Certainly, if he were interested in anything other than how Adrien looks

He said that Adrien is ‘an image of perfection’*. Of course, we know what Adrien’s actually an image of.

His mother.

Idk, guys. I’m just not convinced yet that Hawkmoth Gabriel isn’t a 100% thoroughly awful parent. I’ll believe he cares about anything but himself (and his MIA wife) when I see it with hard evidence.

((* This particular line is a little different depending upon who’s translating. I’ve seen ‘the image of perfection’, ‘the epitome of perfection’, and ‘the embodiment of perfection’, but I don’t know which is most accurate. Maybe @miraculoushawkdaddy or one of y'alls who are fluent in both french and english can clarify it.))
