How to make friends (on tumblr)

peachbunni

Occasionally, I get questions or comments about how I know certain people/am in certain friend groups on tumblr. Part of me finds that strange, because I’ve made friends so naturally. Just treat them like people! Don’t idolize them.

But I also suppose that it’s tricky to interact with people you admire, since this is over the internet and not in person.

So here’s a few things I’ve done to get to know people.

GUYS I JUST REALIZED SOMETHING

Dipper has twice now nearly fucked EVERYTHING up due to not trusting people who really should have been trusted. That’s not even touching on the fact that he also refused to trust Mabel in NWHS, and has generally been paranoid most of the show about taking people for their word.

But man, was he sure quick to trust the really suspicious suggestions coming from his own “mind”:

Bill said before all he needs to enter their realm is a “vessel”. Since he possessed a literal sock puppet before, it’s not too much of a stretch to imagine he’s able to possess a computer. That, or perhaps Bill’s puppet strings aren’t completely cut from Dipper.

Either way, it’s really shaping up to look like Bill’s aiming to persuade Dipper using the only person he’s proved to 100% completely trust: himself.

Trust no one, indeed.

Okay, I don’t think Dipper deserves to get crap about this. It’s easy to act like he messed up by not trusting his family, but would you?

Let’s look at the first case: Dipper tells Mabel to shut down the portal. She sides with Stan and keeps it open.Mabel sides with Stan, and is vindicated when Ford emerges.

But bear in mind: Dipper thought the machine would destroy the world. Ford’s journals said so (and Ford certainly understood the machine better than Stan). Stan said it would be fine, but Dipper had good reason not to trust him. And honestly: would you trust anyone with a machine that could wipe out existence? Hell, it still could, if the rift gets loose.

Then in “The Last Mabelcorn”, Dipper becomes convinced that Bill has possessed Ford and tries to erase his mind. As it turns out, it was just Ford being unpersonable. But look at this:

Dipper was terrified, and understandably so. Even most of the viewers were convinced that Ford was possessed. Dipper had positive proof that Ford had made deals with Bill, right before Ford came at him saying “You shouldn’t have done that” like a goddamn zombie. Ford even admitted that Dipper reacted appropriately by trying to erase his mind.

My point is that while Dipper should have trusted his family in both cases, and even apologized for it twice, being paranoid was absolutely the smartest thing to do. If Mabel had been wrong about Stan or Bill really had possessed Ford, the world would have ended. Should anyone really be trusted enough to wager the fate of existence on them?
