where lila’s deception comes from is really interesting to me.
i dunno WHAT fulfills chloe (control? superiority? luxury?) but it sure as hell isnt other peoples friendship/opinions. whatever the reason, chloe doesnt care if people dont like her. it’s not her priority to please anyone.
it seems like lila is in a similar position of socio-economic power, but she doesn’t have an ounce of chloe’s confidence in herself, the thing that assures chloe she’s the best person in the room even while everyone is glaring at her. lila has a crippling need to be not just liked but adored by everyone. if it’s true that her parents are diplomats, her life is probably already interesting to hear about so she must be wildly insecure if she needs to exaggerate herself to seem even grander. (it would be a cool twist if lila’s parents arent even influential and her life is average but thats for another post)
i need more eps to prove this, but i find it really interesting that she spins a web of lies around herself and gets so offended when people dont believe her, as if she fools herself into thinking its true.
also, i don’t think her crush on adrien is genuine. she’s just new to the school and trying to get everyone to love her. she told nino she could introduce him to spielberg, she told alya she’s bffs with ladybug, she told chloe jagged stone wrote a song about her, etc etc. she’s going around trying to win everyones adoration, adrien was not a special case. he just happens to be the character we saw her schmoozing onscreen (and honestly hes a male model, who wouldnt flirt with him?).
ON ADRIEN AND LILA - i don’t get the impression that she cares about him anymore than the rest. and he’s definitely not into her. but my favorite moment in the episode is when he snaps at ladybug for being cruel to lila. he quickly backtracks and words it a little more nicely, but that’s the moment i started to sympathize with lila. because adrien does.
after ladybug gives lila the drag of her life in front of him, he doesn’t get mad at lila for lying to him. he gets mad at LADYBUG for treating her cruelly. i just really love how compassionate adrien is??? he doesnt know or even like lila but he calls ladybug out because its more important for him to speak against unfair treatment than to make a good impression on his crush. he could have mindlessly agreed and taken ladybugs side to score some points with her and he did the opposite ok adrien is killing me
hes friends with chloe so hes used to looking past pretentious veneers, and chat noir has told ladybug to go easy on chloe in the past. it was really fun to see protectiveness of lila making a little bit of chat come through. before becoming volpina, everything lila lied about was absolutely harmless. hes been on marinettes side before when she dragged chloe, but he defends lila because he can see that even though she fake af, she hasnt said anything that would hurt someone else. while ladybug was blinded by jealousy, adrien can see the lies she told werent really a big deal.
i hope next season he’ll reach out to her. i hope marinette and adrien will pity her because they know everything she brags about is all lies and illusions. they can see how desperate she actually is.
