So the season premiere happened…and it…sure was…an episode of MLP all right. Yep. If you enjoyed it, that’s fantastic, and I’m happy for you. :) But I found it pretty lukewarm.

*Unrolls the “This is just my opinion” flag*

Yeah I thought the premiere was pretty boring. I thought the characterization was really, really lacking. Twilight was pigeonholed into the role of boring magnanimous princess instead of adorkable neurotic nerd, Starlight Glimmer got whitewashed from a dynamic deranged cult leader into a bland Sunset Shimmer substitute, Cadence just stands around looking tired (her exact same role in “The Crystal Empire” premiere), the Mane Six do little, and Celestia and Luna are useless and have little to offer plot-wise. Character building is swapped out for clunky exposition-heavy dialogue (this premiere could have really benefited from some nice songs to pump out quick exposition).

Ahem.

I did like Spike in this episode though. And Sunburst was kind of interesting. The animation was nice.

…..Is there an alicorn in the room I’m forgetting?

Ah, yes. Flurry Heart. She was also pretty “meh”, from her character design to her actions in the story. I really wanted to like her, and there were moments where she was a little cute, but for the most part I found her just annoying. And not cute. How does one make a baby pony not cute? Also her name is still dumb, but that’s a nitpick. And she’s supposedly the first ever naturally born alicorn, upsetting the fan perception that Celestia and Luna were born alicorns. I like that alicorn-ship is apparently something that is earned, but then the show up and ruins that idea by having one just naturally be born. What did Flurry Heart do to earn her alicorn status? It kinda undermines Twilight’s own accomplishments to become a princess. I really don’t like the term “Mary Sue”, but well, Flurry is dangerously close to being one. It doesn’t help that she has no given personality and is largely a plot device. I’m hoping she’ll be better in later episodes.

Flurry Heart doesn’t exist in the Pandoraverse (my story generally doesn’t include anything after season 4 of the show), but that doesn’t mean I can’t draw my Princess Skyla getting annoyed by her “sorta” older sister. Bust your flank your whole life to become an alicorn, and this goober just gets born with a horn and wings? Oy vey…
