Both Ladybug in Volpina and Chat Noir in Copycat express jealousy, but in different, and I believe, very telling ways. Their behaviors can also be compared to Chloe and Lila respectively, arguably making Chloe and Lila their darker counterparts (ie. what they would be like if their character flaws were enhanced). Let’s start with Ladybug (aka Marinette):
So from the get-go of Volpina, it is painfully obvious Marinette is jealous of Lila earning Adrien’s attention.

Notice her use of “my” even though she and Adrien are not together. It brings me back to most of Chloe’s disgusting greetings for Adrien, like “Adrihoney”. Marinette’s dialogue here could easily be mistaken for Chloe’s.

Chloe’s body language is a form of communication as well. The way she proceeds to throw her arms around Adrien and try to kiss him, is all like she’s claiming possession of him she has no right over, much like how Marinette is claiming possession of Adrien she has no right over here.
(but we’ll talk more about body language comparisons between Mari and Chloe later)

After Alya explains who Lila is, Marinette starts panicking and begs Alya to help her break Adrien and Lila apart, not unlike how Chloe and Sabrina frequently team up to sabotage Marinette’s chances with Adrien. But unlike Sabrina, Alya refuses. This doesn’t stop Marinette from taking matters into her own hands. She stalks Adrien and Lila in the library, and then totally loses her cool at the park, abusing her powers as Ladybug to call Lila out on her crap.

Pay attention to Marinette’s body language. She hasn’t pushed Lila out of the way but her thigh is clearly planted between Lila and Adrien, creating an unmistakable (sexual) divide between them with her body. Everything about Marinette is bold. She’s yelling, fiery and aggressive and in your face (literally), and this is gonna be a stark contrast to Adrien’s more subtle expressions of jealousy in Copycat. Marinette doesn’t hide much at all. Her emotions are obvious.
#BLESS YOU BLESS THIS#miraculous ladybug#gosh I’m really glad you pointed out the lack of resolution in Copycat#bc when the volpina ep aired I saw soooo many ppl getting pissed or disappointed in marinette#and making comparisons to copycat#but it didn’t….it didn’t seem like most ppl were looking at adrien’s actions critically#& realizing that he’s deceptive and totally avoiding the blame/consequences for his lie#he doesn’t confess to ladybug or apologize to theo#he doesn’t even acknowledge plagg’s snipe about his jealousy#AND tries to keep LB out of the fight—bc he doesn’t want her to figure out what happened & what he did#if theo says something incriminating he doesn’t want her to be there to hear it#”both of our crushes got crushed” i hope its bc you’re taking her comment about hating liars to heart & feeling guilty#bc honestly theo posed NO THREAT WHATSOEVER#lila at least posed an emotional threat to adrien—if she gained his trust through her lies#and wasn’t exposed until he had already accepted her as a friend (very very very important to adrien. mari knows this)#that could be a hard betrayal to take for someone who’s just beginning to make connections to people#with theo though? it’s pretty easy to realize LB would sign the picture and politely turn him down and nothing would change#anyway both of them have fucked up bc they’re dumb and haven’t gotten their shit together (via smollpearl)
“It didn’t seem like most people were looking at Adrien’s actions critically and realizing that he’s deceptive and totally avoiding the blame/consequences for his lie. He doesn’t confess to Ladybug or apologize to Theo. He doesn’t even acknowledge Plagg’s snipe about his jealousy, and tries to keep LB out of the fight because he doesn’t want her to figure out what happened and what he did. If Theo says something incriminating he doesn’t want her to be there to hear it.”
I’m really glad you brought this up. This is a HUGE difference between Adrien and Marinette’s actions: In addition to being up front, Marinette acknowledged she was jealous, realized she was wrong, and in the end apologized to Lila for being a jerk to her. Adrien, in addition to being sly and evasive, never acknowledged he was jealous, never admitted he was wrong, and never apologized to Theo for lying about dating Ladybug and purposely pushing the guy’s buttons. Adrien is completely wrong. The worst part is that he never confesses to Ladybug about being the cause of Theo’s akumatization in the end either.
Unfortunately I don’t think Adrien saying “both our crushes got crushed” means he’s learned his lesson and is feeling guilty about what he did. If that was the case, I’d hope he’d verbally acknowledge his mistake and apologize to Theo and Ladybug. He didn’t. He hasn’t. I think his being heartbroken is more in reference to the fact that Ladybug pretended to seduce the Copycat Chat to prove which is the real one, insinuating she doesn’t have any true romantic feelings for the real Chat Noir and doesn’t believe Chat is really in love with her.
I haven’t been in this fandom long enough to know for sure, but if what you’re saying is true I think some people overlook Adrien’s bad actions because as Adrien he acts like an angel, and as Chat he acts silly and carefree. He’s either the epitome of purity in people’s eyes, or too silly to be taken seriously. But underneath those masks of perfection and humor is a single teenage boy with serious emotional and identity issues.
I think the biggest reason Adrien didn’t confess to his actions in Copycat (and still hasn’t) is because he’s afraid of losing Ladybug’s companionship if she found out he fucked up. Adrien is so lonely. Yes he has Nino, but Ladybug is arguably Adrien’s best friend and the person that matters to him the most. I’m almost positive that position used to belong to his mother until she disappeared. His mom was the most important person in Adrien’s life, and now its Ladybug. Ladybug brings so much joy and love and light back into Adrien’s life. He can’t handle losing someone that matters that much to him again.
Pretty sure that’s the reason he backs out of completely yelling at Ladybug in Volpina and instead looks kind of scared of her reaction to him calling her out too, because he’s afraid she’ll get mad and stop being his friend. Adrien doesn’t know how friendships work. He doesn’t know that people won’t walk away if he argues against them, something he maybe learned from the way his father raised him. Maybe a big reason Adrien hardly ever stands his ground against his dad and just does what he’s told even if he doesn’t like it is because he doesn’t want to risk upsetting his father and losing him too.
Now, all of that may explain Adrien’s behavior in Copycat, but it in no way excuses it, just like Marinette’s insecurity and love for Adrien doesn’t excuse her jealous actions in Volpina toward Lila. Adrien did the wrong thing lying to Theo and hiding the truth from his partner, and unlike Marinette he hasn’t seemed to learn his lesson yet. He can’t get away with that kind of behavior forever though. At some point, he’s going to have to acknowledge he’s wrong to lie and hide, whether it be through this situation in Copycat brought up again, or a completely new one that hasn’t happened yet. The truth is going to come out, whether he likes it or not.
