”lmao Ive been thinking of Lance’s childhood a lot and???? yeah.. almost all of these are really heavily based off of my childhood and the side of the fam that I used to be really close with
- he grew up with a big family (obviously) with two younger siblings, an older sister still in the house and an older brother that had moved away when he was hella young
- Lance is that older sibling that teases the fuck out of his younger and older siblings, but if theyre hurt or sad hohboi lance is THERE
- he became really good at making hot chocolate for his lil bro, paints nails and does make up with his older sis like a CHAMP, and isnt afraid to dole out some punishment to bullies
- actually he was the one bullied quite a bit but his sis would defend him all the time
- him and the sibs rarely got along, were always bickering and arguing
- but when they did get along/had a common enemy…. holy fuck these kids were an IMMOVABLE FORCE
- the squabbles would turn into a brick wall of linked arms and puppy dog eyes (courtesy of Lance)
- really tho this boy has really good puppy dog eyes. its unreal
- Lance’s house was on the outskirts of a really big town so he lived in a sort of rural area but not really???
- like it was a ten minute drive into the downtown area basically
- Lance’s whole family lived in town, but like all over the place
- he had aunts and uncles living in every part of town
- downtown, uptown, the outskirts, on the edge of the river.. etc
- because of this he grew up with a shit ton of cousins running in and out of his house.
- Lance had a tendency of disappearing randomly, only to end up halfway across town eating roast beef for dinner with his uncle
- if he’s not at home, try aunt Jemima’s, or Uncle Vern’s, or his older brother’s apartment, or…
- his grandma lived maybe an hour away on a strip of beach that she practically owned because grandma is LOADED
- almost every summer Lance would end up out there with whatever other cousins decided to get away from everything for a bit
- Lance legit thinks that this House on the Ocean is in some sot of time anomaly, because whenever he looks back on it he remembers playing around in the water or in the forest or the meadow across the street for forever
- Lance knows that its probably because time moves differently when you’re younger but he likes to think that it was just his special family retreat
- there was a really big meadow across the road there and his little cousins used to play and run around there until the sun sets
- lance was the one to start calling it theyre own kingdom, where the oldest siblings were the kings/queens
- Lance was the king and his sis the queen. they constantly bickered about who had more control
- they gave up the title to they second oldest cousins the next year
- when Lance was nine, his youngest brother got bit by a rattle snake in the meadow and had to be rushed to the hospital
- they never played there again
- lance developed a fear of snakes
- they played to the ocean instead, playing tag in the water and having bets on who could swim out the farthest
- lance had to be saved by his grandma on an aluminum skiff a few times.
- one year, when he was 11, his older brother drove out there with a surf board and a diving suit
- imagine how absolutely AMAZED lance was when he saw his brother surfing
- that was it. that was the moment lance decided; he was going to surf like that one day
- Lance snuck out of the tent he and his cousins had set up while everyone was asleep, grabbed the surf board that was way too big for him, and went to surf
- he failed horribly
- walking back up the beach, soaking wet with his tail between his legs, he was soooo thankful that no one else had been awake to tease him about it
- until he froze, seeing his little old grandma sitting in the rocking chair on the front porch
- he was freaked, awaiting the horrible punishment he would get for sneaking out
- instead, his grandma just gave him a wrinkled smile
- “better luck next time”
- it was never brought up again
- it took two summers for Lance to actually be able to ride a wave without bailing, but he was persistent
- lance was the best at telling ghost stories when they’d all stay up really late staying up under the stars, but his best stories were about aliens and capped crusaders in the sky and intergalactic struggles
- “uhhh, Lance… that kinda sounds like Star Wars…”
- “sis, you’re ruining my story.”
- speaking of his grandma…
- she was a short old lady with wiry grey hair constantly tied up into a bun, thin wrinkled skin, and a constant tight lipped smirk on her face
- lets just say that Lance got his shit eating grin from granny
- she was always so kind and sweet, to the point that doing something bad was almost out of the question
- seeing her frown was catastrophic
- Letter, in the Garrison, hunk would ask where Lance had gotten all his scars from
- lance was very accident prone as a child
- not because he was clumsy, no, but because, if you said he couldn’t do something, he would do it no matter how dangerous
- “where’d you get that scar?”
- “older sis said i couldn’t catch a bird. fell out of a tree, but you can bet your ass that i got that robin.”
- “what about that one?”
- “some asshole in grade five put money on me not being able to climb a barbed wire fence. I left the hospital with ten stitches and five bucks.”
- “and that one?”
- “slipped at a swimming pool and had my first kiss with a concrete floor.”
- okay maybe he was a little clumsy as a kid, but he got better
- once fell out of an apple tree and landed right in his back. had chronic back pain ever since
- once, in the Castle of Lion’s, after Lance’s third or forth time in a healing pod, Lance burst into tears when he realized his back had stopped hurting for the first time in his life.
- one year, at some point in between summers, things changed
- kids were growing up and moving out, cousins stopped talking to one another, everyone started moving on with their lives
- even lance’s older sis had moved out and was having her first kid
- lance stayed the same, for the most part.
- sure, he started getting more and more entranced with the stars and galaxies, but he still dreamed of surfing and picking apples with his siblings and pretending he had come up with the Star Wars plot line
- when Lance, at 15, went to his grandma’s without his younger siblings (he couldn’t even understand why the wouldn’t want to to go the beach) it only took him a second to realize he was the only one there that year
- it was a huge shock for him, because he realized that everyone had moved on from all that besides him
- he realized that nothing could stay the same forever
- he met his grandma there, but he didn’t ask where everyone else was, what they were doing
- she just smiled at him
- “i saved your surfboard for you. it’s still here, if you want it.”
- Lance hated that he noticed her hair was thinning
- that was the year Lance learned how to knit actually
- his sweaters were horrible tho
- that was also the last summer Lance spent on the beach before going to the Garrison
