Rushing forward, Lance ignored everything around him, eyes fixed on the lake as he prepared to dive in, to save Keith from its depths. He didn’t get that far as something tore his legs out from under him, sending him crashing to the ground and dragging him backwards. It took very little time at all to twist around and put his back to the ground so he could look at what was happening.
—————
(!!! oh no!!!)
A galra soldier’s whip-like weapon had grabbed his leg, and he struggled as he was dragged backwards. Panic set in his stomach and he finally slashed down just as he formed his shield, effectively cutting the rope and scrambled forward again. Turning as he ran, he aimed and fired, hitting the soldiers behind him expertly, then turned and dived.
The water muted the sounds of the battle as he searched for Keith. It was dark, and something floated by. Not Keith. Lance honestly did not want to know.
He caught sight of something else and swam forward, catching a glimpse of red and black. Reaching, he found a hold on Keith’s armor and pulled up, lungs burning with every movement. He hadn’t had time to take a deep breath and the edges of his vision were fading as he reached the surface.
Gasping, he pulled Keith up and began to swim to the nearest shore. Depositing Keith was no issue, and a quick glance around showed him that the other Paladins had taken care of the Galra. He turned to Keith, who was silent and cold. He’d already been unconscious as he went into the lake.
“No, no, shit no.” Lance muttered, placing his hands on Keith’s chest and beginning to push. He blinked the water out of his eyes and kept at it, thumping at Keith’s chest and watching the water trickle out of his mouth.
Finally, finally, Keith coughed and spluttered and vomited. Lance turned him on his side and then helped him sit up.
“Are you ok?” He asked, breathless, and Keith coughed more, still spitting occasional water.
“Lance?” Keith asked croakily, trying and failing to focus on the other boy. Lance gasped in quiet relief and jumped forward to pull Keith into a crushing hug.
“I thought I lost you.” He muttered, and Keith gently wrapped his arms around Lance.
“Not this time.” Keith said back.
