YAAAY! My commission is done! Yes, this was a commission. And at the same time my way of contributing a drawing to Sonic’s 25th anniversary. So let’s get to it. Sonic had an announcement back at comic con in July. And two announcements were made for two new games. Sonic Mania and Sonic 2017. Sonic Mania is a game that goes back to its roots and its it’ll feature re-imagined stages and new ones. And you can play as Sonic, Tails and or Knuckles. THAT”S IT! NO Amy, No Shadow. No Sticks, No Cream. Nu-uhh. None uh’ em. They went with the original OGs. And that’s all you need. That’s IT! Only two levels were revealed which was a re-imaged Green Hill Zone and some brand new stage called Studiopolis. I was getting Casino-ish vibes off this one when I saw it because that’s what it seems like this level is going for. The Advanced Series had unique spins on those themes if I remember. Advanced 1 gave us a Casino. Advanced 2 gave us Music Plant and Advance 3 gave us Toy Kingdom. Their spin on the casino/party theme levels. But back to the point: it’s really cool to see that genesis style of the old sonic games while at the same time keeping a newer look with updated graphics. It’s like a blend of old and new into one. Taxman is behind it with his team. Better known to most people as Christian Whitehead. I know the guy as Taxman. Look up Sonic Retro on youtube and search for Egg Gardens Zone. You’ll see what I mean. I’m excited for it. I’m definitely ready for it and I’ll buy it. It’s got sonic fans hyped and ready for it. They gave us Sonic 4 a few years ago and that didn’t live up to expectations, but I liked it. It wasn’t that bad. It was…ok.
That coulda been it. But NOPE. NOOPE! SEGA had to tease people with another game. A new 3D game that looks like it might be similar generations but the team said it’s not a sequel but you know Sonic fans. They don;t listen….they still called it Generations 2 when it’s not a sequel. At the end of the Sonic 2017 trailer did you peep how the consoles listed were Ps4, XB1, PC and NX. Not Wiiu…NX. But NX ain’t replacin’ WiiU though. But it wasn’t listed. Hmm….yeah….interesting. I gotcha. But it’s interesting to see that SEGA is doing this. Because for a long time now SEGA has been doing so many different things with Sonic and it’s been so hard. But these game coming in 2017 show that they’re getting it. They’re giving us a retro version of Sonic and modern version of Sonic. How cool is that? It feels like SEGA is finally getting it. So this makes me excited.
With all the games, we were getting so many different things that just wasn’t Sonic. And I get it, that they don’t wanna do another side scroller or another Colors/Gens. game. I get it. But to me…the essence of Sonic can still be captured in 3D or many different styles of gameplay. Look at Pokemon, Look at Mario, Ratchet&Clank, Zelda, Rayman Origins…etc. There are ways you can change the format of games but you can still have the essence of something that reminds you why you liked the games in the first place. Even though you had weird things added in the past. Certain elements just performed better than others. With Sonic Maina, it’s clearly a nod to the genesis era. But you get it. Like Sonic Colours. People like it…because it stil reminded us of Classic Sonic. Generations did the saaaaame thing.
But yo, Sonic is a big deal. Like deadass. I know people troll. But it’s a franchise that captured many hearts and he did one thing no mascot could do. He rivaled Mario. I fucking love the shit outta Mario too. I tell people flat out: Galaxy is Amazing. Galaxy 2 is a masterpiece. New Super Mario Bros Wii is an old to the classic Marios and it’s still an amazing game. And back then there seemed to be no one out there with the gull to stop that plumber, but Sonic did it. And that was one thing, Sonic was able to do. You know… taking the elements of the side scrolling games, add some of that blast processing, the fast speed, the attitude that made him a rival. These were the reasons he was a competitor to Nintendo. He has a place in video game history. Sonic. Yes that guy. But Sonic Mania and 2017 look great. While Sonic embarks on a new adventure, Blaze the Cat and Cream the Rabbit are back tracking older locations
I feel like with these games. It’s nice to see that they’re figuring out ways to bring new things to the table and at the same time reminding us why…we love SONIC! Like yo, its in the GODDAMN THEME SONG IN SONIC X! Gotta go fast. Make him go fast! Gotta go faster faster faster faster faster faster faster SONIC X!! Anyway, I hope 2017 is the YEAR! HELL YEAH!!! Making our way to the future! THIS IS THE YEAR! LESS GO! So we can stop makin’ the jokes about your past and we can look forward to a bright future…
