The world was on fire.
The world was on fire and Keith was going to die.
He knew it, he felt it in his bones, in his soul, he was certain that when the Castle opened the next wormhole, he wouldn’t be on it. There were too many, he was surrounded. He fought, oh he fought, but it wasn’t enough.
Lance was next to him, however, and that offered him an incentive. Get Lance out. Keep him safe.
There was a lull in the battle. His side was burning, eyes tearing up from the smoke, lungs heaving. He looked to Lance and found him staring back, the same state as Keith was.
“I don’t want to die.” Lance said after a moment, and Keith gave him a small smile. He’d already accepted it, but Lance wasn’t going to die. Not on his watch.
“You won’t.” Keith promised, leaning forward and they met. Shaky lips on hesitant ones, and then purple blasts echoed around them and they parted.
As he had known, Keith didn’t get on the Castle after that battle.
He never kissed Lance again, either.
