Okay, so the Victuri kiss is great and all, but this is actually my favorite screen-cap from that entire episode, and here is why:
- The reporters: Before Viktor took Yuri down to the garage, the reporters were all up in his business, eager to capture his panic attack that they knew from past experiences with Yuri was inevitable. But now you can see surprise on their faces as he and Viktor return, and all interest in capturing the moment is gone. One reporter has her hand by her mouth in shock, and another even has a camera but he’s not making any moves to use it (even though we know from past episodes that the reporters are vultures). It’s because they know that Yuri was crying, and I like to think that they aren’t making leaps to exploit that because Viktor’s hand on Yuri’s shoulder is a sign of “this is serious, this is private, don’t bother him right now”. And the reporters seem to understand that this isn’t the time to intrude.
- Yakov’s dialogue: This is pretty obvious, but “Skate with more confidence” applies to Yuri as well, and the framing really emphasizes that. I also firmly believe that Yakov comparing Georgi to Viktor can also be paralleled with Yuri’s growth and his quick rise to meeting and surpassing Viktor’s standards.
- The framing: Just look at them. They just came back from a fight, which I think we can safely say was still unresolved at this point, but Viktor has his hand on Yuri’s shoulder. They’re walking side-by-side. Viktor is protecting him, just like Chris said. He’s standing by Yuri, he’s literally standing by him like Yuri asked him to and he’s supporting him and ashdfjkl.
- THE MUSIC!!!: As delightfully stupid as Georgi’s routine was, I believe it was at least 90% all about setting Viktor and Yuri up for this moment. When the focus switches from Georgi’s performance to this, the lyrics are as follows: “I’ll always be, be there for you. I promise(…)” and fuck me but that’s definitely not just a coincidence. That’s a deliberate way of showcasing a huge milestone in Viktor and Yuri’s relationship, both as lovers and student/coach. There’s a solidarity between them now, and an understanding that they’ll stick together even when it gets rough. It’s a promise to learn and grow.
So in short, I feel like THIS moment–more than the kiss–is where we really see how much things have changed. This is a breaking of patterns, and the consequent reactions of it. It’s the moment where we see that Yuri’s journey to the Grand Prix is going to be vastly different from last year, and it reaffirms that it’s Viktor’s presence (and his balanced, healthy give-and-take relationship with Yuri) that makes this so.
