This is far from being a new trend, and can be applied to countless works of fiction. It’s still gross though and I can’t be the only one who feels uncomfortable when encountering this kind of stuff, can I?
And in case it wasn’t clear, I’m not out to eliminate abusive relationships in fiction (or nonfiction, because it shouldn’t be glossed over or erased). Abuse is real, and stories should include bad things as well as good. But can we work on the way we understand and engage with that kind of material? Maybe?
