Although he cares a lot for her I think it’s not wise to sacrifice the entire World just because he has feelings for her. I got the message of the show about choose love instead of power but that’s the wrong context to develop this theme.

Okay, so. While I agree with the basics of what you said, this isn’t even what the “letting go of Katara” thing is about. Basically, what we have here is a false equivalence.

To properly understand this you gotta know a little about Buddhism, a philosophy that the Airbender culture is very much inspired by, and one of its tenets is what the Guru is trying to teach here:

To achieve the sublime state of being (not power!) that is Nirvana, one has to let go of all earthly attachments. Katara isn’t just Katara here - she’s a stand-in for all of creation, the physical world.

Aang later gets told that this is the sacrifice the Avatar has to make - the Avatar can never reach that state because it’s his function to serve the world - and that means being attached to it.

So the point of that entire bit of plot isn’t to show Aang’s selfishness in choosing his attachments over the world - it’s to show that it’s these very attachments that make it possible for him to save it. And that sometimes old men who give you advice don’t know shit.

There’s a lot of reasons not to like Kat*ang (and trust me, I really don’t) but this bit really has nothing whatsoever to do with the ship as such or even the character dynamics. It’s all philosophical metaphor.

Yes. I’m referring to the attachment here. What Aang understood was that Katara herself was his atatchment in its entirety. Not the unhealthy attachment he has had to her since the beginning of their journey. This misunderstanding causes Aang to do reckless things. And his attachment is still there after B2 and affects everything moving forward in the series.

I agree with you. What bugs me most is how the idea of enlightenment is presented as unfeeling and cold to all emotions. Not the truth of what it is. But the show gave it a different meaning. And this convoluted understanding of enlightenment is what causes Aang to make risky decisions. Such as inadvertently risking Katara’s life to keep his attachment to her. Not Katara herself. But idea in itself that the unhealthy attachment to Katara was worth endangering her life and the entire Earth kingdom for his selfish reasons. Is worse than the idea that he just misunderstood the Guru’s words. Because, I do believe that Aang understood what his attachment meant. He grew up with nothing but the teachings of enlightenment, and this is reiterated in the four part series finale of “Sozins comet.”

But he only brings up the ideology of letting go of earthly possessions when it benefits himself, not others. Aang has a habit of getting what he wants by twisting the teachings from his childhood to fit his desires. And because no one else from his time and culture is there to correct him. He is the character who changed the least. This is more of a character fault of Aang. But I believe it goes hand in hand with what you’re saying and how Kataang is the train wreck it is.

Overall, it comes down to this. The series focuses on Aangs feelings entirely, much like aang himself does. While Katara is never shown to reciprocate these feelings other than forced instances in meaningless fillers that could be taken out of the series entirely and not change a single plot point. In the end, what Aang did was selfish, as is most of what he does.

While what Zuko did, was absolutely selfless. It was a split second decision that he made without hesitation. He didn’t think of anything but protecting Katara. Aang only thought about keeping her.
