Me, starting to write chapter 18 of my Voltron fic: Okay, so I definitely don’t want to go for sympathetic with Zarkon’s character. Dynamic and interesting enough to make a good villain, but that’s it. This is Allura and Lotor’s story. He’s just an obstacle in their progress and the plot. Yup, totally.

Me, halfway through the chapter: Wait, wait, this wasn’t the plan! Why do I suddenly have plans for a story based on Zarkon and Haggar’s past? Where did all this damn backstory come flooding in from? How the hell did this weird old alien get me to reimagine the entire arc of the plot when he’s barely started talking?
