Hello, let me chime in on this as a Samoan with a very strict Samoan background. Samoan tattoos are extremely sacred and important. When you get a traditional tattoo it require weeks-months (sometimes years) of preparation and extensive research into family trees and family villages. Every shape and shade represents a different aspect in your life, whether it’s the original home place of your grandmother, to your wife’s impact in your life. There’s a great pride in receiving one. The Tufuga Ta Tatau (master tattooist’s) are respected and spend years gaining and apprenticing to get the position. The highest kind of tattoo for a a person to get a Pe'a, which is an extremely strenuous process that is extremely painful, they take weeks to complete, and can only be tattooed onto the head of a village, the head of a family or someone who is extremely respected in the community. The process of getting one is regarded more as a ritual or ceremony. They’re so celebrated and praised and important and I so appreciate your guys respect for them. x
