I had a crazy thought about the Disney Villains mashup vid. Thomas said we can interpret it how we want and I think I found another interpretation.
What if the demons are there making a deal with whatever Thomas is instead of us, the pov character, being a human making a deal with him? They’re the ones invited to sit down. They’re the ones Thomas is directing his words at when he says “You’re changing you’re changing you’re changing alright.” And although they’re all identified as ghosts or demons, it’s clear that they’re in a very human setting.
Another thing that makes me think about this is that the line Terrence sings from Shiny is “Far from the ones who abandoned you, chasing the love of these humans that make you feel wanted.” which is overlapped with Foti and Valerie singing “Love is an open door” and followed by Leo singing “Because they guzzle up the things you prize” from the heffalumps song. So what does that mean? Humans are the gateway to something. Humans eat up something or already did it.
Whatever Thomas’ character is, demon, ghost, human, the devil, god of trickery, whatever he is, I think in this case his friends on the other side are humans, and not very nice ones at that. But the demons need to get at them. For one reason or another. For money, for power, for love, for pure fascination, for any of the reasons they hinted at in their lines. I read this as a final meeting between old friends before they do something drastic. Something horrible, greedy, selfish, ultimately damaging to humans and maybe themselves too.
But in any case they need to go to the other side. And what if they need to be summoned or believed in to get there? What if they somehow need to be changed? Or, lose their lives to get where they need to go? They all walk in but none of them walk out and they seem more solemn near the end. Not exactly hesitant but afraid, sad, bittersweet. Like they’re saying goodbye or about to do something really huge.
And as for us, the viewers? We don’t seem to have a place at the table. It’s full whenever the camera pans away. However, Thomas is definitely talking to us. Looking right at us. So are the demons. It also seems from several camera angles that we’re sitting right where Foti and Terrence are. Maybe, then, this room is the gateway between the two sides or we were a necessary part in moving everyone over. Maybe we think we’re in the room alone with him. I think we are there, we do play a role, but this isn’t our story. It’s theirs, and they’re planning something awful and we let them do it. We were likely a pawn in a larger game, whatever we are.
