Some Non-Spoiler Thoughts of The Hidden World

A few quick impressions:

  • Holy bloody FUCK the ANIMATION holy FUCK.
  • THE ANIMATION.
  • Like, I went into this movie expecting to see top quality blow-off-my-socks animation, and I got it. Screencaps could fool someone for a live action, but for the fact that they’re way prettier and more artistic. Hiccup has never looked better. I loved the use of haze and fog and smoke and fire and water and how those all interacted together. And the landscapes and visuals? WHOA. Like, all the settings are drop dead STUPENDOUS like I will forever be in awe. THE SETTINGS GHGHGHGHGH [sobbbb]. But even a screencap like Hiccup and Tuffnut chilling together will have beautiful lighting affects on their hair and I’ll want to screencap it and cry over the animation for two hundred and three years.
  • The visuals are what I love THE most of the movie, honestly???? XD It’s just so fucking gorgeous.
  • I appreciate how much they put the dragon riding gang in this movie. HTTYD and HTTYD 2 always had them very much on the periphery, and it was through the shows we got these characters. But in THW, we get a rather decent amount of memorable screentime with Hiccup’s entire peer group. Dang. I’m impressed they could figure out how to fit that in.
  • Ruffnut and Tuffnut especially get gold stars for their contributions to this film. Holy fuck wow. XD I love those two.
  • Love the references they made to other parts of the franchise! Seeing a dragon species from ROB/DOB/RTTE material, or having a brief comment about something in GOTNF.
  • Toothless was markedly more anthropomorphized in this film. Not my personal preference. But that was definitely there.
  • The music was very well-done. As we’d expect! Still had folk elements in there, though they don’t “stick out” as much as they do in HTTYD, a few tracks excepting (usually when pulling in ethnic instrumentation <3). There are some tracks in particular I know I’m going to listen to a lot; I haven’t attached to the soundtrack yet but I know I will because it’s high quality. Each HTTYD movie’s score is uniquely different in its atmosphere, and this blended perfectly with what THW is. It’s got the same smooth prettiness that is the animation style of THW. Downside was there were a few moments that were straight measure-for-measure repeats from the first and second films, which I always fucking haaaaaate (I’m looking at YOU, Prince Capsian), but the quotations weren’t all so long and frequent as to actually irritate me here.
  • I flailed in the theater at one HTTYD book reference because you guys have NO idea how much I have wanted it for over five years.
  • Good pacing throughout the film. Very smooth pacing. I’m? Rather impressed, given the way the story comes together?
  • Great dialogue and use of humor throughout the film.
  • Tuffnut’s new VA did a great job. Honestly, he says so many Tuffnutty-esque things that we’ve come to expect in RTTE-Tuffnut dialogue, that it’s amazing it wasn’t T.J. Miller adlibbing.
  • Advertisers need to quit showing so much of the entire movie in the preview ads for fuck’s sake.
  • I know HTTYD 2 had that gigantic battle with hundreds of humans and dragons, so that by default probably makes it the most battle-intensive of the trilogy. But THW deeeefinitely feels like the most action-oriented of the three, and I fucking love it for that. Like. There were some nice exciting scenes in there and YUS.
  • At the same time, I’m highly impressed at the amount of non-dialogue moments they put in here, where there was nothing but music to sing us through. They took time for those. Bless.
  • Hiccstridders are gonna be fucking screencapping every second of this film like damn.
  • One of my headcanons came true and I’m feeling the sweet sense of victory. XD
  • I didn’t cry or choke up or anything (my friend next to me was crying pretty good). There *was* one gasp moment for me. VERY effectively done. Wish it’d been about three seconds longer but damnnnn.
  • Grimmel was a good villain. Good villain vibes. One scene in particular is a standout where you’re just like “oooooohoohohohohohooooo.”
  • There’s a looooot I’m thinking through and mulling over.
  • Still hasn’t clicked that I’ve watched the third HTTYD movie honestly???
