One day I decided to explain some of the important technical and flavor differences of various spellcasters to my students.  

So I turn to the wizard, and tell him “You’ve mastered the use of magic through rigorous study and practice.  Thanks to your hard work and intelligence, you can learn pretty much any spell, but every morning you have to choose your spells and precast them ahead of time.  So basically every morning you get up and do homework for an hour”

Then I turn to the cleric.  “The source of your powers is the blessing of your god, who trusts you to represent and honor her.  You can request any spell you need and it will be granted as long as you keep her favor.  So every morning you get up and pray in supplication”
