When Allura talks to Lance after Blue doesn’t respond to him, she says this:

“My Father built Voltron, but he knew Zarkon was a better leader in battle. so he became Voltron’s right hand. Lance, when you accepted Keith as the new leader of Voltron, it proved that you value a strong team over your own need for glory.”

We know that Allura wanted most of all to pilot Red just as her father did, as stated by Coran. At this point, she is relinquishing any chance she has of that to Lance in order to both save the team and support Lance, crushing any insecurity he has about his abilities. We also saw how Allura was feeling somewhat guilty that she wasn’t out there fighting like the rest of a paladins and wanted to put her life on the line for her team. And of course we all remember Lance throwing himself in front of that bomb to save Coran even though they had practically just met.

The one thing that ties these events together is self-sacrifice and putting the well being of others before that of your own.

The driving quality of the Blue paladin is self-sacrifice.
