When the Paladins all come down with a cold at once…

allawander

Allura and Coran are immune, because they’re biology is too different for the virus to affect them. This is fortunate, since someone has to keep things running while the paladins are out of commission. They find that, while not quite as messy as the slipperies, a human cold can still get pretty gooey, and they’re careful to stock the entire ship with space-kleenex.

Shiro mostly carries on like nothing’s wrong. He cancels training to give everyone a chance to rest and recuperate, but he continues to work on strategies and read up on anything that might be useful from a tactical standpoint. He just does so with a box of space-kleenex close at hand.

Keith tries to keep training anyway. After he nearly passes out, Shiro bans him from the training deck. In the end, Keith grabs his pillow and blanket and holes up in Red’s cockpit to try to sleep off the sickness, like a feral cat curling up in the safest place it knows to recover from a wound.

Pidge basically just puts herself to bed with her computer and starts coding minigames to entertain herself. No sense in screwing up something important by trying to solve a complex problem with a brain that’s functioning at a sub-optimal level. She manages to hack together her own versions of pong, mine sweeper, and tetris.

Lance makes himself a blanket cocoon in the main lounge area, hoping to snag sympathy and hot beverages from passers-by. Coran hangs out with him for a bit, and they swap stories about how they handled minor illnesses back on Earth and Altea. The Altean equivalent of chicken soup is apparently some kind of spicy fruit dumpling.

Hunk manages to put together a soup that, while it tastes nothing like chicken, ends up being dubbed “space chicken noodle soup”. He distributes bowls to all the afflicted paladins - including Keith, once he manages to track him down - and then hunkers down on the couch with Lance for some bro time and a nap.

  • Matt: I want to get married in the mall of America. I think that's a really cool wedding destination, cause it'd be like a celebration of capitalism, and consumerism but also of my vows. And then the people shopping.
  • Shiro: Okay I feel like that's the equivalent of you telling me you want to get married at Legoland.
  • Matt: That’d be pretty dope too. I think the Mall of America has a Lego store.

Imagine Allura being the blue paladin. Imagine her trying to connect with the blue lion and getting little bits and pieces of Lance’s feelings and memories cos you can’t connect with a lion without kind of connecting with its previous paladin a lil bit, you know? So she kinda gets these little flashbacks: Lance taking care of his little sisters while his mother cooks, Lance messing around at the garrison with Hunk, you know, that kind of stuff. And then she gets to the feelings: there’s the feeling of Lance missing home and his family, or that little moment of self hatred he gets every time he’s shot down by another girl. And the sadness of feeling like he’s not needed. And imagine Allura just sitting in the cockpit, shocked, because why hadn’t he tried to tell her he was feeling like this? Then she would remember all those times when he’d start to tell a story about something funny his brother did or “that one Christmas where -”, and she would cut him off, telling him to get to work, to train harder. Or all those times he would whine about missing home, and she would tell him to stop being selfish. Imagine Allura starting to understand Lance as a human being a little bit more that day.
