Kindness, my Rogue Assassin Tiefling for a D&D 5e oneshot I played last night. Bounty hunter, burglar, killer for hire - a criminal jack-of-all-trades loyal mostly to herself and her next paycheck, Kindness got kidnapped by a powerful witch and sent into a magical labyrinth together with a pastel-coloured Tiefling bard, a wide-eyed Eladrin warlock dragged out of the Feywild and a tiny cinnamon roll of a Gnome Paladin.

Fun was had. Deals were nearly made with other evil witches. A pastel-coloured T.Rex did a really passable waltz. Kindness was sent back to the Material Plane with her memories of the events mostly erased, but with a magic brooch around her neck and a Wish in her back pocket that might just come in handy some day.

… she was only supposed to be a one-shot character, but I can’t wait to play her again.

Something I found really helps me when I am either struggling with depression or trying to over compensate on days when I feel motivated is that each day before I get caught up in stuff, I have to stop and make a list of the things I want to accomplish (Everything from chores that need to get done that day to long term projects I find important or things like- take your medicine or hydrate when I am sick). Then as I do them I can cross things off. The reason I do this is because while the list can seem overwhelming- that is already going to be running through my head regardless, but now at the end of the day I will have a tangible way of going ok look at what I accomplished. Its not about getting the list done, its about getting something done off the list. Then the next day the list gets revised. So when I am trying to do to much its a reminder that- look I am getting things done but this will still be here tomorrow, and on the hard days I can take pride in just meeting any goal and pressing ahead.

I don’t know if this is something that anyone else would benefit from but I know it helps me a lot so I figured I would offer the suggestion.

this is a good one :’O

i try making lists but kind of get too overwhelmed to even look at it and end up reading or playing video games all day? smaller lists (usually priorities/responsibilities) get a reaction of ‘ewww i don’t wanna’ when i’ve tried them

i guess for me the challenge is/would be finding the balance? between ‘oh god i’m gonna die if i even start this’ and ‘none of the items on this list are acceptable get them out of my sight’

it’s something worth working on, at least. thanks!!

addendum to this, because my mom gave me some stupidly good advice for how to make lists work when you’re easily overwhelmed and/or distractable:

  • put eeeeverything in a list. don’t categorize it, just have it all there
  • when you wake up in the morning, pick one thing on the list that you feel like you can do/want to do that day
  • do that thing only as long as you want to, and if you’re not done with it by the time you’re done, that’s fine!
    • cross it out anyway and, if it still needs work, add it to the bottom of the list again
  • take a break or pick something new from the list, whichever you need to do.
  • if you think of something new, just add it to the bottom of the list
  • repeat ad infinitum

it doesn’t need to be pretty, just legible. work on what you can work on, and don’t beat yourself up for not being able to do what you can’t. make sure to cross out the things you did, even if they aren’t complete—this gives you a visual for your progress, which you have made, even if it’s not complete yet.

progress is progress; celebrate it!
