What she says: I’m fine
What she means: I just can’t believe Adrien is the best fencer in his class and he lost against MARINETTE, a novice that doesn’t even know the rules. Maybe he was going easy on her but every time we’ve seen him fence we’ve seen him lose. Marinette is the best at everything she does. We’ve never seen her designs fall flat, never seen her lose a game match, she even threw together a professional album cover in less than a day. Then she scores points on Adrien her first try at fencing like what is this? We’ve never gotten the chance to see Adrien succeed at fencing, something he’s supposed to excel at. We’ve never even seen him actually play the piano. The only talent we’ve actually seen him accomplish was speaking Chinese and that was soley for romantic development with Marinette, AKA the time Marinette sucked at something only for romantic development. Or the time he won a game so he could team with Marinette, only to constantly lose against her afterword and give her his spot in the competition because she’s so much better than him. And I’m fine with romantic development, I love it, but that’s the only time we actually get to see Adrien succeed at something he’s stated to practice. That’s not even counting their hero lives. I know I argue that Chat is kind of a grunt because his purpose is to protect Ladybug, the only one who can purify akumas, and to distract villains so she can do so. That’s fine, I really do think he does good work, but sometimes he looks like a bumbling baffoon compared to Ladybug. She’s the better fighter DESPITE ADRIEN BEING A FENCER AND HAVING OTHER ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES LIKE BASKETBALL. Yeah I bet you forgot that he supposedly plays basketball. I just remembered this instant. Idk man I love both these characters, that’s why it’s kind of hard for me to see Adrien get underdeveloped or even knocked down just to make Marinette look better. I love that Marinette is so talented but sometimes it really does just seem like overkill. How does she consistently best everyone, even people like Adrien and Max, who dedicate themselves to an activity she’s just picked up or only considers a hobby? I’m all for girl power but it doesn’t seem realistic. Aside from fashion, which is her passion, it seems like this show favors Marinette’s plot-induced natural talent. I’m fine with Marinette being great at some things, but she doesn’t have to be the best at everything. I just EXPECT her to best anyone at anything she picks up now, and Adrien to be second best at best. I’d want to see Marinette have a more specialized scope of talents, not just “be better than everyone else.” I want to see Adrien accomplish more outside of romantic development. I’m really bored of this.
