VLD: Season 5 Thoughts

Hello, Hi, Aloha, Hola

As we as, a Voltron Legendary Defender fan base species, welcome the almighty season 5 into our warm embrace March 2, 2018, A.K.A tomorrow, A.K.A HURRY UP AND DESTROY MY EYES ALREADY- I just want to make a few points or at least one point if nothing else gets done on this blog. Like anything ever…

Oh! My lovely Blue Baby Boy- there he is, isn’t he gorgeous?!! LOOK AT HIM!! I’m a big Lance stan, haven’t you heard?

Ok enough of that, for now, let me get into why I’m currently annoying all of you with my thoughts. Lancey Lance and the Altean broadsword. I’ve seen many points on why he was so angry while training, or he trains to get his frustration out just like Keith, or the lovely bonding moment between him and Allura (SIBLINGS! HELL YEAH)

Which are all great points and things to talk about from this clip but that’s not what I’m focusing on. The big picture here to me or the rather small one since I’m talking about one thing is Lance’s weapon(s)

At first, our adorable sharpshooter has this weapon (a gun, what do you want from me I don’t know the names of every exact gun, I’m trying to get the man off my back), Lance being a ranged fighter with a sharp eye made this a good choice for the character. It’s simple and efficient, much like Lance as he started out in the show and much like the blue lion who is the calm mothering type to her paladin.

Fast forward to who knows how long they’ve been in space; you’d think they’d have a calendar by now- Lance now takes on the role as a paladin for the red lion and unlocks two new forms; the assault rifle (I believe) and the sniper rifle. To me, this is a sign or symbolism of Lance having inner turmoils about his position in the team while also struggling with Blue lion’s rejection and following in Keith’s footsteps while also trying to make a name for himself as a leader and as Lance a paladin of Voltron. Even though both weapons have great advantages and usefulness like Lance, their designs aren’t simple and seem more jagged and rough. Like his inner turmoils. This sets up even further character development. From a boy to a man is my ancient proverb of the day.

Now on to my baby and his broadsword because YES

For whatever reason other than “You have greatness in you”- which is true. Lance has unlocked another form of weapon, this time it is not a gun but a sword, which is completely different in every way from his previous weapons. Guns are long ranged while the Sword is close combat. You can use this as a jumping point to say that the gun was a way to symbolize that he was too far from his goal or too afraid or wasn’t ready yet so he was kept at a distance, and that the sword can symbolize that he’s becoming closer to who he is meant to be.

My favorite point in all of this is the part about the sword itself. As seen, Keith’s sword is more jagged and rough, not the clean-cut finish that you would normally see with a sword, and his handle is still in the shape of the Bayard. While Lance’s sword is smooth, traditional and stable and his handle doesn’t take the shape of the Bayard but as that of a sword hilt; as though to state that he is finally where he is supposed to be or closer to it than he’s ever been before. The teenage hormones have subsided and the calm, cool, collected, clear-skinned daddy is upon us…. soon

Does this give way to black paladin Lance, maybe? But it does give me a positive feeling that Lance will take on an even higher leadership role very soon.

P.S. to all the people out there, these are just my thoughts and opinions and fangirl fantasies about what this could mean. I’m just speculating but obviously, I felt strongly enough about this that I needed to write and voice my inner thoughts.

P.P.S. I’m just squealing because Keith has a Galra sword and Lance has an Altean sword so my little shipper heart is ready to ride this pain train to the bitter end HELL YEAH!!

Something I think people need to understand, and I can't believe I have to say this. Being anti-gun control does not equal being pro murder. I was discussing the topic with some friends, and frends of those friends who don't know me as well gave me looks as if I was an absolute monster. I'm talking looks of hatred here. All I had said was that I don't think guns are the issue, but Mental Health is.

I’m going to have to respectfully disagree with you about the mental health issue. As a counterpoint, I’m going to paste an ask I just got that sums up my feelings and also gives me the opportunity to knock out two asks at once:

“The “its a mental health problem, not a gun issue” argument is the EXACT same as saying “teach men not to rape” or “teach burglars not to steal” It’s just so naive, and the people saying this would be the exact ones mocking that argument from the other side. “Fix mass murderers mental health problems, dont take away their means of killing people” is fucking stupid. Sure, making guns harder to get won’t stop criminals. But it will stop teenagers who shoot up schools. Because they get them legally”
