I like haunted houses in theory BUT I have no idea how to react when the actors speak to you. They ask me a question and I just… answer it…

The scariest part of a haunted house is the unscripted social interaction.

Scary nurse in a creepy voice: “Do you have an appointment to see the doctor?”

Me: “Uh. Do you accept walk-ins?”

Scary farmer: “I like to kill people!”

My friend, brightly: “I like to die!”

Zombie : “AARRRGH”

Me : “Do you get dental insurance?”

Zombie : “TEETH!!”

schmergo

This happened to me.

Scary prison dude: HELLO

Me: Nice to meet you!

Him: (pause) No it’s noooooot

My worst horror house experience was when I couldn’t find the (rather obvious) exit and the guy chasing me with a chainsaw stopped, sighed and pointed me to the exit, saying “please scream as loud as you can when you run out there” and just left. I disappointed the horror house chainsaw dude and I will never get over that

Guy: They are all my friends.. (motioning to hanging corpses; then grabs a noose) Will you be my friend?
Me: Sure totally, you made me a friendship necklace? Oh my god your so sweet?
Guy: … Yes.. Please, let me.. I cant I cant just go (laughing).

– Got to walk a second time through–

Same guy: My friends -wailing-
Me: I came back I just really wanted to be friends so bad
Guy: (laughing more) Please, Im not allowed to laugh.

I went to a Haunted House and literally befriended every actor there.

Specifically, I remember;

There were zombies walking around in the waiting room. I said “Hi!” and he gave me a high five. Every time he passed from then on, I got a high five.

Near the end, there were these twin little girls. “Come play with us.” They said. “Okay!” I said. “Forever.” They said. “Oh, sorry, can’t do that. I’m busy.”

I could hear them giggling.

Guy playing Freddie Kruger: Remember, you are all my children!

Me: thanks dad

A small chorus of teenagers: thanks dad

I went to a haunted corn maze once. Someone ran at me with a chainsaw. I just stared at him. He hung his head and walked away. I left.

Doctors insisting that all women take pregnancy tests before having an X-ray is sexist and paternalistic. I’m a lesbian who’s never been sexually active, but I’m always required to take a pregnancy test “just in case.” This practice reflects the general culture of doctors not believing and trusting women, and it needs to change.

thats-so-roentgen

I’m gonna respond to this in a weird way but just. Stay with me for a minute. Let me do my x-ray tech thing real quick. I agree wholeheartedly with what you’re saying, and I’ll come back to it, I swear.

The original purpose of a pregnancy test before an x-ray was to make sure there’s no fetus being exposed to radiation, which can result in the worst case scenario in birth defects and miscarriage. Radiology and medical imaging in general operates on a risk-vs-benefit scale. Is doing a chest x-ray to see if you have pneumonia worth a small risk to the fetus? In many cases, of course it is. I personally don’t like x-raying pregnant people (not that it has anything to do with pregnant people, but more about how most doctors don’t understand the first thing about radiation safety when they over-order exams), but sometimes you gotta. Pregnant people get sick and need healthcare. That’s that.

But the thing is, that’s when people KNOW they’re pregnant. We explain the risks and benefits to them, so they can make an informed decision. Some people refuse, some don’t. It’s their choice.

But if you’re pregnant and don’t know it yet, you can’t make that informed decision.

So we offer pregnancy tests to people who are unsure of their status in that regard. To give them peace of mind if nothing else. If somebody is sure they’re not pregnant, they’re still making an informed decision. Most places have a form you can sign saying there’s no chance of pregnancy and y'all can get on with the test. I fill it about 20,000 of those papers every shift at my hospital. I know they exist.

What happens a lot, though, is that you go to the ER (for example), and the doctor orders an x-ray and an hcg, and the nurse asks for a urine sample or draws some blood without telling you it’s for a pregnancy test.

Y'all. That is not informed consent.

So then (if your ER is anything like mine), you have to wait 10 years for a nurse to have time to test the urine or for the lab to process the blood. And all that time wasted for nothing, because you knew you weren’t pregnant.

Next time you get an x-ray, tell the nurse up front you don’t want a pregnancy test and that you’ll sign whatever form you need to.

It shouldn’t be your responsibility to do that, tho. That’s the thing. Doctors and nurses should inform you that they’re running a pregnancy test, because it’s your right as a patient to understand what kind of care you’re receiving and to refuse any exam or test you see fit.

But doctors don’t like hearing “no”, so they don’t tell you so there won’t be a fight. That has to change.

OP, I want to tell you that, no matter what a doctor or nurse or anyone might tell you, x-ray techs know the rules about radiation safety better than they do, and they cannot REQUIRE a pregnancy test. They can suggest and recommend it, but they cannot REQUIRE it. It IS sexist and paternalistic not to listen to a patient in any way, but especially in regards to what can be a very sensitive subject. No one should force you to undergo a useless test that only serves to delay your care.

TL;DR: start refusing those motherfucking pregnancy tests when you walk in the front door, y'all. It’s your right as a patient. Make them listen to you until we start teaching our new doctors not to be assholes.
