When the royal family of the Bitter Sea gave the order to kill all the merpeople of the Sea of Light, the army spared no one- but a child. Arion, son of the storyteller Mira and the locksmith Lyre.
Young Ansel was a soldier, loyal to his king, but something that day stayed his hand from killing the small child. Not only he didn’t kill him, he helped him escape from the city.
Years later, Arion returned to his destroyed city and there, in a cave deep inside the palace, he found something that his mother had described thousands of times in her stories: the legendary Trident of Light. And in an instant of clarity Arion understood that the king of the Bitter Sea had killed his people to get to this weapon. In vain.
Rage blinding him, he seized the trident and swam to the Bitter Sea.
But his intention to kill everyone faded as the guards watching the city gates came into view… for it was Ansel hovering there. The older merman recognised Arion immediately but didn’t move. His kind eyes spoke to him, Go ahead, if that’s what will give you peace I won’t stop you.But Arion realised that wasn’t what would give him peace because seeking revenge wouldn’t bring his people back.
So Arion nodded to Ansel and left towards unknown waters.
