An AU where the reveal happens only after Marinette keeps accidentally hitting Adrien in the head with small objects.
A spool of thread. Her purse. A macaron.
It slows him down at first…and then he keeps hearing not-so-subtle digs from Alya about his obliviousness possibly being related to getting knocked in the head so many times (in between her elbowing Marinette and telling her there are far easier ways to snag his attention.)
Eventually, one of those objects lands just right…and Marinette’s inevitable, rueful – and all-too-familiar – apology finally causes inspiration to strike.
Person A: “Will you stop me?”
Person B: “Not like I have a choice, do I?”
Person A: “You could, if you changed sides.
Person B: "Changing sides means changing everything I stand for and worked so hard for. You know how hard I struggled! We grew up together! Now…look at us.”
Person A: “The rejects of society, huh? Who would’ve thought? Us? On opposing sides?”
Person B: “It doesn’t have to end this way. It’s your decision. You can end this and then we-”
Person A: “And then we what?! Go back to the way things were? You’re naive if you think that’ll really happen! That’s one difference between heroes and villains.”
Person B: “What?”
Person A: “The naive belief that things will return to the way they were.”
Person B: “What if it’s not naive? What if it can be done?”
Person A, smiling brokenly: “Then it’s already too late for me.”
