Can we talk about the moments in the novel that never made it into the film?

  • Elisa not only dreaming about water, but dreaming about a mysterious man under the water and thinking that man was already better than any man she’d ever met before.
  • Giles’ van being called the Pug.
  • Basically the whole of Lainie Strickland’s character. Her development is so well-written and she deserved better in the film. She starts out as a meek housewife, who then realizes that her husband is a piece of shit and starts to forge her own path.
  • How Giles and Lainie’s plotlines converged.
  • Giles keeping his toupee on a human skull named Andrzej.
  • Giles being sick but not knowing.
  • Zelda dreaming of opening her own cleaning business and taking Elisa with her to get out of Occam.
  • How Strickland keeps calling Zelda Mrs. Brewster.
  • Strickland hating eggs.
  • Strickland being so traumatized by the jungle he constantly hears monkeys screaming in his head.
  • Him being called the “Devonian” or “Deus Brânquia”
  • The creature glowing with light every time Elisa enters the lab. Her heart breaking every time he’s in the tank and not in the pool.
  • The fact that the creature can only be out of water for 30 minutes.
  • How Zelda thought Elisa didn’t want to be her friend when in reality she just wanted to protect her by not dragging her into this mess.
  • The creature changing the color of his bioluminescence according to his mood.
  • Dmitri almost committing suicide before the Occam job.
  • Dmitri constantly thinking of his parents.
  • The creature signing E-L-I-S-A, his favorite word.
  • Elisa wading into the pool when trying to free him, almost drowning, but he’s there to hold her and bring her above the surface.
  • Elisa pouring water over him in the back of the van from bottles as she holds him.
  • Elisa buying plants and lots and lots of tree-shaped, pine-scented air fresheners to create a little jungle for the creature in her bathroom.
  • The creature trying to love said air fresheners “for her for her for her.”
  • Elisa being so lovesick she thinks about him while she’s doing her shopping.
  • Elisa being covered in his shiny scales after they make love.
  • Elisa teaching him useless things like “New York Philharmonic Orchestra” and “Egypt” and him going along with everything because he just wants her to be happy.
  • Him having a little tail!
  • Him trying to eat everything that he gets his hands on while exploring the apartments. Him thinking that everything is a rock. Him calling Giles’ drawings his “little twins.”
  • The cat actually offering itself up for the creature.
  • The creature licking Giles’ wound instead of touching it.
  • Elisa lying in the bathtub with him on their last night together.
  • Animals (even a pig) gathering on the docks to see the creature. Him parting a group of rats like the Red Sea.
  • Elisa signing “stay, stay, stay, stay, stay,” when he can’t see.
  • Zelda and Giles beating up Strickland.
  • Zelda and Giles bonding after the creature and Elisa disappear under the water.
  • Him referring to Elisa as “the woman we love.”
