Curiosity

Hey can I run a little survey within the HTTYD fandom about the new movie?

Can you guys reblog/reply and tell me three things (they can be estimates if you don’t remember exactly):

1. When did you first watch anything HTTYD related, and what was it?

2. When did you join the fandom, if you consider yourself to be part of the fandom?

3. Are you satisfied, neutral or dissatisfied with the plot of HTTYD 3 so far, especially regarding the female Light Fury being Toothless’ mate? Feel free to elaborate if you want. Emojis welcome.

I want to see if there’s correlation going on here, I’m very curious. I have my suspicions but I want to see if I’m totally wrong. Please tag your spoilers for others if you’re going to reblog an answer!!

I watched the first film when it came out and maybe a few times randomly on TV in the years after that.

I joined the fandom on December 1st, 2012, after being convinced by the Rise of the Guardians fandom to rewatch it, and then I fell in love with it.

I am…skeptical and concerned about where the plot is heading. Nothing they’ve released says that what will happen will be bad or disappointing, but it falls into trope patterns that are worrisome and unnecessarily sexualized and gendered. I don’t want that. Besides that, the concerns of a mate for Toothless make me fear that the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless will be overruled or ignored, and that’s something I don’t want to happen. That’s one of the major reasons I love this trilogy so much and I don’t want that to go away.

1. Saw the first movie in theater in spring 2010, went to see it several more times.

2. Back in 2010, I hanged out in the Livejournal fan community. Then found the Tumblr fandom a bit later, in 2012.

3. I’m… kinda concerned with what we know of the “light fury love interest” plot so far. I mean maybe they’re just over-emphasising it in the marketing, and it won’t actually be like, uh, like *that* in the actual movie (“that” being… you all know this trope, and come on, has it EVER been done well?). But seriously, this basically looks exactly like what people making fun of bad sequels were mock-speculating in “worst possible outcome” discussions back in 2010 on Livejournal, when sequels/spinoffs to HTTYD were first announced.

Also, HTTYD2 felt a bit like it left the plot/themes/character of Drago (and the Bewilderbeast) kind of hanging/rushed, and back then, it was indicated that this was because HTTYD2 and HTTYD3 would be closely tied together, and we would get the rest of it in the next movie. But now there’s talk about a new, different villain, and what have you… like, HTTYD2’s arguable incomplete-ness was forgivable because *it wasn’t supposed to be the whole story*, but if they don’t… actually deliver the rest of it…

Oh well. Maybe I’m worried for no reason and it’ll turn out fine. Sometimes the marketing and what the movie actually focuses on don’t have much to do with each other.

  1. How to Train Your Dragon 1, in 2010.

  2. Sometime in 2010.

  3. I’m not concerned, I trust that they will make this a good film.

That being said, during this period when we have zero information about the surrounding story context, Light Fury is absolutely hilarious. Imagine if the ONLY piece of information DreamWorks released a year before HTTYD 2 was that TOOTHLESS IS TURNING BLUE. Without any story justification. Only that one fact. Toothless. He’s gonna be BLUE. That’s what they just did right now. I’m not worried, just really amused. Light Fury is weird, but Light Fury is good so Light Fury can stay.

1.  I first saw HTTYD1 just before the trailer for the second movie was released, so late 2013/early 2014 maybe?? .. yes, that is 4 years after it was released. I never see movies when they’re first released ..

We loved it so much when we first saw it that we watched it again later that same day or early the next day (details are slightly foggy)!!

2. I stalked the Grapevine for several months before I actually participated, but I JOINED the Grapevine (and consequently, the fandom) in November 2015.

3. To be honest, the news worried me a little (especially the Toothless love thing .. I’m not the biggest fan of love stories and Toothless belongs to Hiccup!! Not some random female - if I’ve learned anything in my relatively sort life, it’s that you can’t trust random females =P), so I’ve defaulted to my normal process of laughing all possible information away until it solidifies enough to smack me in the face. XD

1- I watched the first movie in a Ramadan day. So it was a few weeks before the Httyd 2’s first trailer.

2- I don’t remember clearly when I’m joined the fandom but I was so impressed to httyd and constantly researching about it then I found Tumblr and created an acc. At first I couldn’t feel belong myself in fandom but then I got used to it

3- I absolutely didn’t like the Light Fury and the love interest thing for now. Maybe they have a different plan than we thought. Idk… I just want to wait till the trailer.

1 - I saw HTTYD for the first time on TV in early 2011 (I think???). Loved it, kinda forgot about it for a while until they started playing GOTNF on TV later that year, and then the movie again over Christmas break.

2 - I’d say I joined the fandom end of 2011 after I got back into the movie after GOTNF came out. Teletoon also started playing the movie non-stop one week and that was it for me. No escape. I used to stalk Pinterest for anything HTTYD (I think I still have the largest HTTYD board on the site??? Idk), then eventually got Instagram and Tumblr etc. and I’ve been here very since!

3 - I honestly have no idea what to think of HTTYD 3 news because everything is so vague and we haven’t even seen a clip or trailer for ourselves yet. I’m staying as open minded as I can because I trust the Dragons team to give us the epic finale we’ve been waiting for! (I AM PREPARED TO DIE.)

1. I remember seeing a poster about HTTYD 2 at the movie theater when my Aunt brought me and my siblings to see Frozen. We never (and still don’t unless I pay lol) went to see movies in theater. Then I actually watched the movies in September of 2016.

2. I joined the fandom in December 2016.

3. I have nothing to say about anything we’ve seen as of yet. There’s been nothing definite, and the main things we’re basing off of right now are rumors coming from word of mouth. I trust Dean and the filmmaker, so I’m not going to panic until we get some for sure news that I get to see for myself. ;)

1. I think I first saw Riders of Berk on Telly around 2013/4, and then some time after when I was trying to watch Madagascar my mum suggested gift of the Night Fury as an alternative.

2. I guess August/September 2016 was when I was interested, but officially a part of the fandom would have to be January/February 2017.

3. Eh, I’m fine with what’s going on, as long it’s as good as the cast and crew promise. Plus, you can’t tell much from what we’ve been given, apart from another Night Fury and lot’s of different looks for the gang and co.
