VLD + Ancient Greek Words for Love

So I’ve seen some fascinating discussions recently about Keith’s “I love you” to Shiro, the different types of love people have interpreted that as referring to, and the different connotations involved when the line was translated into other languages. It got me thinking about the different ways the Ancient Greeks defined love, and the ways we see those different kinds of love on the show.

(Note that using Lotor and Allura for eros doesn’t necessarily imply that I think their relationship is a positive one - in fact, the Ancient Greeks often saw eros as an irrational, potentially destructive form of love compared to these others. Lotor and Allura’s romance reminds me of the kind of erotic love you’d see in Greek tragedy - the passion between them is real, but so is the devastation that follows in its wake.)

Also, before anyone starts; I’m not interested in anyone using this as an opportunity for discourse. By definition, human emotions are complex and I think the different words various cultures have come up with over the years to represent the many facets of love are a testament to just how complicated love is. One relationship can (and often does) include elements of several of the types of love listed here. And personally I’m a believer in respecting that complexity and respecting the different interpretations people bring to the table when we analyze fictional relationships.
