hey! some of y’all seem confused as to what is queerbaiting. let me explain.

queerbaiting is, as you can guess, making the viewers believe a romance between two leads of the same sex (often men) is possible. this is done through editing and dialogue. the cast and crew may often join in.

image

pictured are two very famous exemples. both supernatural and sherlock have delved quite deep into making romantic subtext for both these ships while having no intentions of ever confirming them to be anything more than just buddies.

obviously, this is a problem. companies want you to watch the show they produce but do not want to be too bold or too daring. after all, this can be just passed as friendship and we’re seeing too much – can’t two men be just friends in this day and age?

now that i have your attention…

voltron isn’t queerbaiting.

shiro being lgbt was always the plan. it was always something they wanted to do, not something they added to appeal to a community they never wanted to please but rather, profit off.

this is not and never was what voltron aimed for.

image

the showrunners have said this was something they had to fight for. bex, who is part of our community, had to fight for adam and shiro to not be only reduced to only roomates. is the scene subtle? yes! like a few things in voltron, but it’s about as subtle as keith’s father’s grave. even more with the scene where shiro, who is usually quite stoical, shows a great deal of emotion seeing adam among the victims.

subtelty is not a bad thing. remember, dreamworks airs voltron in deeply homophobic countries. we can condemn them for being skittish when their boldness could get them so much praise? yes. but a company wants to make money first and be held in high regards second.

the showrunners had to work around these censors. they told us too, that shiro was a man in a relationship with another man and that they were about to be engaged when they went on separate ways. shiro, alone, is amazing representation. he doesn’t need to be in a relationship to still be mlm and still be one of the main characters, a man who leads a warship and the resistance of earth against the invaders, shown to be capable and courageous at all times. adam dying, if a plot device, just rattaches him even more personally to the fight. casualties happen in war – adam himself, on the forefront of the defense of earth, is himsef a hero who gave his life for that fight. to have a man in an openly gay relationship be shown like this is also undoubtedly positive.

voltron isn’t queerbaiting you because shows who are will never confirm that the characters are in a relationship. lauren and joaquim did just that – they told us, just to make sure that, if we didn’t understand, there would be easily found records on the internet of this. the press talked about it. it’s a bold move, especially seeing how the scenes are not so subtle.

image

anyway. to end this, be kind. you can be disappointed that shiro and adam will not meet again and pick up the loose ends but voltron isn’t queerbaiting you. it always wanted to have a gay lead. it’s not profiting off you, they were honest and clear.

shiro himself is amazing representation – lgbt, japanese and masculine, disabled veteran, mentally and chronically ill. be good to the people who made him and fought for him to be able to present him to us, without having to closet him.

Lance and Keith Growth:

So, here is the thing. In this post I talked about Keith and Lance’s relationship, but now I want to talk to you about their growth. Before I start, I have somethings to say. 1) Season 7 was good. Could it have been better? Yes, but that doesn’t mean the art, the voice acting, the music was bad. It wasn’t. It was really good and you have to give credit where it’s due. 2)Honestly it was kind of boring to one point, and it is what it is, but again it wasn’t bad, it was somethings that needed to explain. 3)The last post and this post aren’t to revive Klance or anything. Klance never died and you guys can fight me. Klance is really real and is the most natural progression, but will DW do it? Who knows, but that doesn’t stop making Lance and Keith good partners. 4) Our representation that they promised. This is the only thing that has me moody till today and probably for a long time, but I won’t hate the show, I’ll just move on.

So now that we got all out of the way, lets move on:

Alright let’s start,

image
image

Alright, Lance has always had insecurities with being in the team and being a paladin. Even though he says that he is the cool sharp shooter, he really doubts himself.

image
image
image

He really is insecure. This boy doesn’t see the potential he has. Lance is more than a cool sharpshooter, he is the right hand of Voltron. The second in command and I’m so glad Keith is back, because he’s the only one that can push him to not only a better leader, but to be a better person.

Just look at this,

image

Keith put Lance in charge, willingly. Keith said it verbally and that is so important. Every time Lance had had to step up as a leader it was due because he had too, not because they asked him too. The time Kuron was in Voltron, Lance had to step up and grow, he would always have fights with Kuron,

image

He would always have to get involved forcefully.

image

He would always be ignored,

image
image

And of course Lance was affected. After all, Shiro is his hero.

image

But with Keith, Keith chooses Lance. There is no fights no hurt.

Just friendship,

image

Trust,

image

and protection/worry.

image

Keith made Lance officially the second in command. He has been told now to lead.

I mean, look. This isn’t a seventh wheel like before,

image
image

There are more people, more skills, more leaderships. There’s Shiro, there’s Allura, there’s Krolia and out of all of them, Keith picked Lance to lead.

image

Back in from season 4 to season 6, Lance was isolating himself,

image

He was training,

image

and most importantly, he was pushing himself away from the paladins.

image
image

But now that Keith is back, he is slowly fixing those things up

image
image

Keith is making everyone feel needed. He is reminding them that they’re more than paladins,

image
image

and I’m just going to say that this is such a HUGE development from my son Keith. He’s opening up to the paladins, he’s telling them that they are friends, they need to stick together. Everything happened for a reason. I’m so glad Keith said this because,

image
image
image
image
image

This is key:

image
image

and then we get this,

image

Lance is on Keith’s right side. Lance accepted Keith as the leader once again.

I just want to comment on this one last time,

image
image

this isn’t just a worried face of Keith potentially getting hurt or anything. This is the face of Lance being scared that Keith will run away again. He did it once,

image

why would this time be different? But Lance chooses to trust Keith.

image

and as we all saw, he came back.

Moving on, like I said before,

Keith ain’t good with words,

image
image

Look at the way Keith is standing, he’s closing himself, but yet he’s trying to open up and let Hunk know that he’s there for him.

image

Keith won’t flat out say why he truly picked Lance. It would be 1) Hard for Keith 2) Out of character. Keith is a actions speak louder than words type of person. Of course Lance will be more open to say stuff like,

image

Lance is more verbal,

Keith is emo. Lol, he is a boy of actions not words,

image

and in this case his actions was to pick Lance.

It’s the little things Keith does that makes a difference. Even though he has grown and matured, he is always going to be Keith. He will always be somewhat bad with words, but that’s okay, because at the end people always get his message, even if it is crappy ones.

image
image

Plus, Bob threaten to keep them there forever, out of all the paladins who was the one bad at playing?

image

Lance.

Who was the one getting themselves almost hurt?

image
image
image

Lance.

image
image

To add more, Keith believes Lance is better being out and leading the collision than playing in a game which he’s terrible at. lol

Now, Season 7 felt a lot like season 1, Examples:

Season 1:

image
image
image

Season 7:

image
image

Season 1:

image

Season 7:

image
image
image

See through the lions eyes.

Season 1:

image
image
image
image
image

Season 7:

image
image
image
image

They’ve really grown. Keith was NOT making fun or doubting Lance’s skill’s. This boy was messing with him, it was like a tease and a warning. lol.

Keith more than anyone knows what Lance is capable.

image
image
image
image

Keith trusts Lance. He puts Lance in positions that only someone with instinct and skills would be able to handle. Keith is making Lance grow into a leader.

Keith didn’t ask Lance if he thinks he could shoot the drones, he doesn’t even over think it, he just tells Lance the plan, he teases him and get into action.

image
image
image
image

That’s how a team should work. Trust is very important and we see it get stronger and stronger between these two,

image
image

Name one time this boy felt like his skill weren’t good enough this season! None, because Lance didn’t have a reason for it. Keith is the leader, Keith listens to him and makes him have a big role in the group.

image

That’s what Lance NEEDED! HE NEEDED TO BE CHOSEN. Lance see’s Keith how Keith has been maturing,

image
image

Lance now is doing the same. Lance is following right behind him,

Season 1:

image

Season 7:

image

And Keith is waiting for him,

Season 1:

image

Season 7:

image

Because at the end of the day, It’s Lance and Keith, neck and neck.

Season 1:

image

Season 7:

image

Their bond is getting stronger and stronger, and it’s starting to pick from where it left off,

Season 3:

image

Season 7:

image

Keith knows of what Lance is capable of and more. After all, Lance has always been Keith’s first choice,

image
image

for a reason.

image
image

Lance is Keith’s impulse control.

And for Lance, Keith is the future,

image

I already said this but, Lance was really hurt for Keith leaving the team,

image

Yes, this was mean, but this is also part of how Lance truly felt when Keith was leaving the team. Lance felt that Keith was running away, and to be honest, Keith was,

image

But Lance didn’t mean the, “Maybe you should have just stayed away.” because this boy was the most affected before Keith left,

image
image

When Keith Left,

image

and after he came back,

image

Lance was the most affected by Keith’s departure,

image

Yes, even though Keith and Lance didn’t interact like we wanted when they met again, expressions matter more than words.

image

You can clearly see the hurt in Lance’s face.

Back in season 3, Lance and Keith had gotten really close and then poof, Keith ran away, not only from the team, but from Lance.

image

Lance really was hurt by Keith running away, and you can see it. Keith was lashing out at Hunk and Allura, not Lance. Lance got into the fight and he said the first thing that hurt him and Keith the most

image

Lance has never been afraid to call out Keith on his flaws,

image

Lance and Keith need to talk and stop running away from each other,

image
image
image

and at one point, it needs to happen.

Also, Keith has been with the best leaders around,

image
image
image
image

He’s growing and evolving, but he’s not doing it alone,

image
image

Keith is helping Lance get there. Not verbally, but with actions.

image
image

episode 3. i don’t really know what to say about this except that lance has previously talked about movies in the show, and keith definitely was paying attention. not only that, just look at keith’s face. he looks concerned.

image
image

lance looks badass ngl.

image

when pidge is put in danger, both lance and keith are singled out as the ones who are most pissed about it. and honestly, same. they do have a soft spot for the small one.

image
image

really cute scene here. this parallels the beginning of the show - lance and keith carrying shiro away. also - something interesting - it may be a reach, but coran referring to lance as “princess allura,” reminds me of when allura was named as “keith,” during his time away.

image

okay, okay - this.

this scene is really important. not only is keith singling lance out as one of his closest friends, whom he trusts, but he’s also giving lance his time to lead. the words - “lead the way, keep the team together,” that’s meant for a lot more than for one scene. lance’s relationships with many of the team, he’s been trying to keep everyone together. he’s the glue, the water. and it’s taken a lot more literally in later episodes.

image

they’re both holding the team together, not only emotionally - but physically. as co-leaders, they keep it balanced.

image
image

but during this scene, what most stood out was how they were positioned. lance’s slight ¾ profile view, and keith opposite. they’re equal in the way they’re standing. lance didn’t nod at keith affirming him to go save acxa, he looked worried - distraught.

often - implied romantic scenes in movies, the character who means the most to another is the one in the focused frame, closest to the frame, eyes on the other character. the group is behind lance, not even a part of their conversation. this scene was meant for keith and lance, and them alone.

it also slightly reminded me of this scene with lotor and allura:

image
image
image

also, i didn’t really want to get into other ships, since this is my “klance interaction post series,” but people have been saying keith and lance have no chance because of acxa. keith doesn’t blush - doesn’t even smile. he gets frustrated and says “can’t we just fight?” sorry, that doesn’t sound like a romantic relationship, especially with a guy who’s shown to have no interest in women since the start of the show. he wouldn’t begin a relationship with a minor character with a limited amount of screentime.
