Lance tells Shiro that he’s bi
“Shiro?” Lance asked, his voice quiet and unsure. “Can I…talk to you about something?”
Shiro glanced around the room, then slowly sat down on the couch. “What is it? Is something bothering you?”
“Well, yes.” Lance paused. “And…no. I mean..”
Shiro smiled. “It’s alright. You can tell me.”
Lance took a deep breath. “Is it true that you had a boyfriend back on earth?”
Shiro’s smile disappeared. He shifted uncomfortably. “Who told you that?”
“I didn’t mean to…. You don’t have to talk about it if-”
“Was it Keith? I mean, he’s the only one who would have known. How much did he tell you?”
Lance sighed. “Not much. His name was Adam?”
Shiro nodded.
“What was he like? Was he tall? Did he love space as much as you do?”
“He wasn’t quite as passionate about space travel as I was. He told me not to go on the Kerberos mission. He said I could get myself killed.”
“Oh. But you didn’t listen, did you?”
“Well, you didn’t think Keith was the only stubborn one, did you?”
Lance laughed. “So… is that why you broke up?”
Shiro’s jaw tightened. “Yeah. He told me that if I went, he wouldn’t be there when I got back. But I wasn’t going to let anyone tell me what to do. Not even my fiancé.”
“No wonder you and Keith are so close. You’re both stubborn, rebellious, overly-confident-”
“Hey,” Shiro protested. “Speak for yourself, sharpshooter.”
Lance smiled, but didn’t say anything else.
“So,” Shiro ventured. “You seem really concerned about this. Is there a reason?”
“Well,” Lance spoke slowly, unsure of how to phrase his explanation. “Was anyone…… Did anyone give you any trouble for it?”
“Well, people talk. And yes, it was hard to be open about who I was, especially since so many people were judgemental.”
“How did you…” Lance paused. “When did you realize?”
“I was about fourteen years old when I realized. But, you know what? It’s just a part of who I am. I don’t see a point in hiding it.”
Lance gave a relieved sigh. “Yeah. You’re right, I guess.”
Shiro leaned forward. “Well? I sense you might have a secret of your own. Want to talk about that?”
Lance relaxed slightly. “How do you know?”
Shiro shrugged. “Call it a hunch.”
“Okay, well…” Lance glanced around the room to make sure no one else was there- especially not Keith. “I think….”
Shiro grinned. “You think….?”
“Well, actually,” Lance tensed up again. He ran his fingers through his hair and huffed. “I think I’m bi.”
Shiro smiled even wider.
“And,” Lance continued. “I think…. Well, I’m afraid, actually… I might have a crush on Keith.”
