This post is in response to a few posts I saw about Adrien/Chat Noir being annoying in Silencer that got me thinking. Normally, I don’t really have a problem with Chat fooling around during akuma attacks, but his playful nature stuck out in a…noticable way in this episode. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but then it hit me: Luka is more mature than Adrien. In an episode that focuses on Luka, the difference in maturity is too great to ignore.
Now, I’m sure if Adrien was at the scene instead of Chat, he may have been more serious, but he wasn’t. Ladybug has lost her ability to speak and use her lucky charm, and Chat is over here saying things like “well, it has its advantages. You can’t mock my humor!” and then procedes to do a dramatic reenactment of Ladybug calling her lucky charm. Don’t get me wrong, I still think it was funny, but at the same time I acknowledge that it was uncalled for in the situation. To be fair, Chat did quickly relent and stop his teasing, but it showed that he was not taking things as seriously as he should have.
It is understandable that Luka would be more mature than Adrien as this point. Luka is a few years older than both Adrien and Marinette, and his demeanor is usually pretty laid back. I’m also going to assume that Luka’s parent(s) didn’t keep him locked away in a mansion his whole life and stunt his growth. Because of this, we see Luka time and time again make very mature decisions to the point where….well, why WOULDN’T the fandom consider shipping Lukanette over Adrinette?
One big example that supports this is in Frozer when Luka saw that Marinette had feelings for Adrien, and supported those feelings because they were important to her. Then, of course, in the same episode we see Adrien get rejected (again), and he does not take the rejection very well. He tries to move on to Kagami, brings Marinette into the picture as “just a friend,” and then pretty much ditches Kagami to run after Marinette (which he denies when Plagg confronts him about it). It was kind of a mess. Then, when he sees Ladybug he acts cold to her, trying to cover up his hurt feelings by pushing her away. I know a lot of people use this example to support Adrien salt, and to each their own, but to me it is a great example of where Luka and Adrien are emotionally and mentally.
This is why I have always loved the idea of Luka being Marinette’s first boyfriend. Through him, she would be able to learn what a healthy relationship looks like, and what she deserves as the amazing girl that she is. Though she is in love with Adrien, he is just not ready to step up to the plate and be what she needs right now. He has the potential; we saw as much in Oblivio. It’s just that the boy is a tad naive, and he has a lot going on between his newfound freedom, shitty father, and missing mother. It will take time for him to get to the same point with Marinette that Luka has.
This brings me back to Silencer. Luka becomes akumatized not because of any jealousy over Marinette (like many of us predicted), or even over XY plagiarizing his music. Nope, it’s because Bob Roth had the nerve to threaten the girl he loves. Hawkmoth says as much when he sends an akuma after him. Then, Luka confesses his feelings to Marinette in such a romantic way that even Tikki was impressed.
I truly hope that Marinette will allow herself to give Luka a chance. It would be amazing development to her character and the show. Unfortunately, I fear that kind of development is not central to the show, and that Marinette will still reject Luka because of her feelings for Adrien. Perhaps that just goes to show where Marinette’s maturity in the love department is as well. They’re still just kids, and that’s hard to remember when they constantly have to make adult decisions as superheros.
Knowing that Luka is set to become a superhero in the future, it will be interesting to see more of the dynamic Luka has with the other characters and how that reflects on Adrien’s relationships. Maybe there is a good reason Adrien and Luka both become wielders of the snake miraculous!
