Ethics aside, at least that Stanford study about detecting sexual orientation from selfies didn’t fail to give us some horrifying face renderings in an attempt to explain results.  It’s tradition!

Is it just me, or do both the gay faces give the impression that they are wearing eyeglasses?

wirehead-wannabe

Does anyone else read this primarily as “red tribe vs blue tribe faces”? I feel like the learning algorithm might just be picking up on that as a predictor of self-identification. Also age, because young people are more likely to self-identify as gay.

genderfight

gays have glasses because sin has blinded them.

But yeah, the thing that stuck out to me most was absolutely age.

The notes on this have mentioned age a number of times, but age is actually something they controlled for in this study (full text linked in the original post).  On page 12, they describe the data set that they used.  For men, then median age was 33 with 50% of all pictures of men between 30 and 36 (for both heterosexual and homosexual men).  For women, it was a median of 29 years old and 50% of all pictures of women between 25 and 34 (again, both heterosexual and homosexual).  So for all intents and purposes, looking young is gay culture.

On top of all this, the results of this study aren’t that impressive.  After using a number of strategies to increase their accuracy (including giving the algorithm 5 different photos of a person), they were right 91% of the time.

That number might seem impressive at first, but even the highest estimates show that the general population is less than 7% homosexual or bisexual.  That means that if I guess that every single person is straight, I’m going to be right 93% of the time, which is better than this dumb robot.
