Tides requested this one over DM, and I went a slightly different direction with it ^u^

“Quit smiling at me, I can’t stop messing up my sentences when you look at me like that.”

He was waiting, coiled so tight he thought he might miss it, so wrapped up in the noise of it all. He thought it might be hard to hear, over the beeping and shouting and rushing and the haggard anxious noise of his thoughts. He thought maybe it was a cliché,

That everything else went quiet.

When he spoke to her for the first time, his voice was thick and shaking and foolish and young. He felt so desperate and inexperienced, but also so completely overwhelmed with something that felt so much bigger than joy…

He had to say it right, he had to get it all right from the very beginning, but his hands were shaking, and he was scared.

“Hold her,” Alya cut in to his panicking, and he looked away from the baby for the first time since he’d seen her. Alya was laying on the bed, exhausted and quiet, strands of hair plastered to her forehead, but her eyes were so bright. And her voice was so strong.

She smiled at him gently, encouraging him to come forward, to do what he had begged himself he be capable of when the time came.

She was so small… her tiny hands roaming and gripping weakly at nothing, looking for him.

“I’m right here,” he said, his voice so alien to him, but when he saw her searching he was desperate for her to find him and he reached out, something completely indescribable leaping from her skin and into him that changed him into someone else.

A father, desperate to say all the right things.

Nino knew he was crying, looking down at her and holding her, so new and bright and vulnerable, and he knew Alya was watching him. He could feel her eyes on him and he hoped that powerful pressure he felt from them was pride. Even beyond the pressure he felt Alya gently reach out, weakly resting her hand on her back and letting her fingertips slide, reminding him she was there as if he could forget.

Feeling both of them, his daughter in his shaking arms and his wife steadying him… he was aware of how much of his heart was in this very moment.

He felt weak to it, he felt weak to everything, but he just wanted to be strong for them.

“I’m here… It’s me… I’m here,” he told her wandering hands, and he shook with tears again when he felt the smallest, weakest grip.

He turned, leaning down to rest their daughter between them, Alya reaching out so that they both might surround her, all of them touching, all of them together.

“I knew you’d cry,” Alya said softly, and he could hear her smile in her voice though she was subdued. “You were worried you wouldn’t.”

“I didn’t know what I was going to do… I didn’t know about anything.”

“How about now?”

Nino paused, running his thumb gently down their daughter’s cheek, before he looked to his wife.

He had always thought she was beautiful, one of the most beautiful women he had ever seen… but seeing her as a mother… was so much more than he thought he could survive.

She smiled at him, and it was enough to bring him down… but he stayed strong. Cause there was something strength giving in it too.

She made him weak, and yet stronger than he had ever been. And he knew that for as long as he lived their smiles would undo him.

And he was happy with that.

“I’ve got so much to say, I want to tell her… and you. I want you to know-,“

“That you will never leave,” Alya whispered, smiling still, holding the hand of their daughter as she slept now. “That you will always try. That you will always listen… she knows, honey.” She leveled him with her trusting smile. “We know.”

“I have to get it right… I can’t get any of the words right when you smile at me like that,” he admitted, voice heavy and the laugh he let out shaking and full. But his voice was so real, and he said it again, “I want you both to know…”

He looked down, and watched as tears clouded his glasses and his wife smiled over their sleeping daughter.

“I will always love you. And I will always… be here.”
