her neck is long

this concept art for ladybug is like a billion times cooler than the final product and I really wish she actually looked like this
Working on a little something!! I think it’s looking good so far!
Me thinks Chat Noir is feeling a little….. chat-grin… 😹😹😹
It’s always interesting whenever the discussion over if Ladybug’s
outfit isn’t as well-designed as the other Miraculous-wielding
superheroes and supervillains we’ve seen so far. Honestly, I feel like
her outfit could be a lot better.

The issue with Ladybug’s outfit is that it’s so one-note. A pattern of red with black polka dots isn’t bad by any means, but it’s disappointing that there is nothing else for it to contrast or blend with. The material for all of the outfit is the same, and the only notable color/pattern difference is the solid black collar and solid red ribbons, the former detail being especially nice but both still being so little variety to an overly-unified outfit.

Just look at the main five heroes’ outfits. None of them are as limited to the same pattern, color, and clothing details as Ladybug. Queen Bee’s outfit isn’t just made out of a single stripe pattern. There are variations in size, placement, angles (where the stripes are bent to points, and proximity. It’s even better that Queen Bee has solid black arms and legs with yellow accents for her heels and fingers. Visually, there’s a lot more action and intrigue going on with it. Rena Rouge and Carapace’s outfits also feature multiple colors, different sections, and different patterns.
An added bonus for them is that they have added, unique clothing details, Rena Rouge with her zip-up dress jacket (and its long coattail) and Carapace with his hood, goggles, and padding. Clothing detail is part of why Cat Noir’s outfit works too, despite it not having any color variation outside of the bell and eyes. It’s the same material, but it has a lot of different parts to it, like the gloves, jacket, pockets, belt, and boots. It doesn’t have to include additional color and pattern variation between there is a lot of unique, distinct elements to the clothing, something that Ladybug’s outfit unfortunately doesn’t share as a way to make up for her outfit’s simplicity.
I get the reasoning of what Marinette’s style preferences are or how it was based on her own thoughts or ideas when she first transformed, but I’m not looking at the in-universe justification for this. Credit can also be given that her outfit modifications when she’s in ice skating mode or underwater mode work a bit more with additional pieces and details, but personally, I feel it’s a shame that the original Ladybug’s outfit, the outfit of the main heroine, doesn’t impress me like the main hero or the other Miraculous holders’ outfits do, including some of the past Ladybugs.
To improve upon Ladybug’s outfit, I think the most simple improvement would be more contrast. I think it’s easy to only think of ladybugs as their red shells with black dots, but what adds more flare to the red is the Ladybug’s black body, head, and legs. The red isn’t as overwhelming when paired with sections of black. There’s even white spots and sections on a ladybug’s face that can add on to the differences in colors and patterns on the ladybug.

Why not really bring out the red and black in Ladybug’s outfit while also not letting it get dull with vision overload by adding in sections of black on her arms, legs, and/or body? It helps balance the design, which the collar kind of does but can’t do alone when it’s such a small feature. Some great examples of incorporating black sections into Ladybug’s outfit were concept pieces by Thomas for the Ladybug PV.

Another set of drawings from Thomas, this time sketches of ideas for an adult Ladybug, and a doll of Ladybug with a different outfit show both of the benefits of adding black and adding more clothing details. I think the black works fine, but if her outfit needed more contrast and variation, it could be worth giving her a jacket, a skirt, or something else to shake up the consistency in her outfit’s material and structure.

I recall hearing somewhere that Ladybug would get a new outfit in the future, and I hope that’s true. Her current outfit isn’t bad, and I understand those who like it. However, I find that the lack of risks with Ladybug’s outfit is a shame when many other Miraculous holders’ outfits stand out amazingly. Maybe it’s silly to dream of an updated outfit involving even just a little more black in her outfit, but if there’s a character in any superhero series I feel should get their outfit updated in-series, whether the reasoning is strong or weak, it’s Ladybug.
“The main characters of this show are in middle school/early high school (depending on the translation). Of course they’re going to make mistakes. Y’all giving them hell over it and acting like people pop up fully formed adults is just mean. To them and to real kids their age who are learning and growing”
