On Second Thought
The day after “Chameleon.”
“You’re here early,” Marinette said as she walked up the steps of the empty classroom to her new seat.
“Nah,” Nino said, fiddling with something on his tablet. “I’m usually here around this time. Good time for music stuff.” He was sitting in her seat—but not the one she’d vacated the day before. Her new one. The one he’d pushed her into.
She climbed up until she was next to the table. “You’re in my spot?”
Nino swallowed. “About that,” he said. “I asked Alya if she’d be cool with you and I switching seats.” He leaned back, stretching his arms and crossing his hands on the back of his neck. “I see her enough outside of school, and we both agree that leaving you alone yesterday wasn’t cool.”
Marinette raised her eyebrow. “Seriously?”
Nino coughed. “Yeah,” he said. “Plus we kind of… don’t do well in class when we’re sitting next to each other.”
Marinette smiled. “I could’ve told you that,” she said. “Alya can be very distracting.”
Nino blushed.
“You’re okay with sitting by yourself?” Marinette said as she walked back toward her old (new-new) spot and dropped her backpack. “Kind of lonely back there.”
Nino chuckled. “I sat back here all of last year by choice,” he said. “I think I’m fine.”
Their silence wasn’t exactly companionable, but at least it was more comfortable than yesterday. Until Nino cleared his throat. “Uh, hey, ‘Nette?” he said.
She turned. “Yeah?”
Nino twiddled his fingers. “Um. Adrien talked to me yesterday afternoon. He told me… well, he said Lila had lied to him before. About being a superhero.” He swallowed. “I’m sorry. For not believing you.”
Marinette’s heart stopped. Adrien had actually stood up for her? He’d… “Who else knows?”
Nino cleared his throat. “I, uh, I told Alya,” he said. “And she told everybody.” He fiddled with his ear. “So, uh, don’t be surprised if she tries to punch Lila as soon as she walks in.” He dropped his hands to the desk again and sighed. “How did you know?” he said. “That she was lying?”
I’m Ladybug, Marinette didn’t say. Instead: “Jagged Stone hates cats.”
“Ah.”
She stared at him. He stared at his tablet.
“Why did you assume I was lying?”
“What?”
Marinette crossed her arms. “You’re my oldest friend, Nino,” she said. “I feel like I deserve more faith from you than that.”
Nino shook his head. “I know,” he whispered. “I just… you can be kind of intense when you talk about Kagami, you know? And we thought…”
Marinette flashed back to the disastrous ice rink date, when she’d had to watch the other girl get closer to Adrien and been completely unable to do anything about it. She gritted her teeth. “You thought it was the same situation.”
Nino coughed. “Yeah.”
Marinette turned back to her seat, unloading her tablet from her backpack. “I’ve never lied about Kagami.”
“No. You haven’t.” Nino drummed his fingers on the table and sighed. “We were all pretty unfair to you yesterday,” he said. “I’m… not supposed to be telling you this, but Rose is planning an apology picnic.” He chuckled. “Lila isn’t invited. Obviously.”
Marinette flushed. “Oh,” she whispered.
“Only the best for our everyday Ladybug,” Nino murmured, turning back to his music.
Adrien walked in the door next, a smile bursting across his face as he saw her. “Marinette!” he exclaimed. “You’re here early!”
“H-hi, Adrien,” she said. “You.. told Nino?”
“Yeah,” he said, dropping his backpack and sliding into the seat in front of her. “Why wouldn’t I?”
“Yesterday, you said… ‘as long as you and I know…’”
Adrien raised an eyebrow. “Yeah,” he said. “That was yesterday.”
“You changed your mind?”
Adrien squeezed his eyes shut. “Darn it,” he said. “No, I, uh, I meant that just for that day. Emotions were high, you know? Spilling everything right then wouldn’t have fixed anything.” He smiled beatifically, and sheepishly. “I just meant we should wait a little bit.”
“That’s not what it sounded like,” Marinette grumbled, looking down at her tablet.
Adrien groaned. “Nothing I say ever comes out right, does it.” He looked up at her, his gaze soft. “Hey,” he said. “I told you I’ve got your back, and I meant it.”
She smiled. “Thanks, Adrien,” she whispered.
He smiled and gave a mock bow in his seat. “Always at your service,” he said, then turned back to his tablet.
Marinette frowned at the gesture. There was something familiar about it… she just couldn’t place what.

ML au Angst idea: (Post Oblivio angst)
-After Oblivio, Marinette is 110% done with this bulls***
-About Ladybug and chat noir being in love, cause it was all over the place. Rumors at school, tv shows and interviews with celebrities
-Alya got an interview on the news to talk about the amazing photo she took.
-And chat noir is only stoking the flames worse
-He isnt saying they are a couple, but he does toss out that it is a possibility
Which Ladybug is seething about, and she is done.
-She calls him for a meet up one night
-Chat noir thinking Ladybug is finally gonna come around
-He was wrong
-The verbal lashing about this whole ordeal is glass shattering
-”Hawkmoth stops trying to go after our miraculous on the day the two of us get together.” (The equivalent to saying hell would freeze over)
-She finishes
Chat noir is just shook, but He says he understands
-He apologizes that his actions made her feel this repulsed and how he didnt see anything because he was so focused on the joy he felt, that he never thought she would be so against them being together
-He just assumed that maybe… it didn’t matter
-He is trying so hard not to cry He leaves
-Ladybug thought maybe she was a bit harsh, but she was still mad so she didnt go after him.
-Tikki lets her know that, it was uncalled for. She admits that Chat noir was not innocent in the situation, but this whole thing wasn’t his fault and she didn’t need to drive the point so deep.
-Marinette said she would apologize over the tone, but not the message. (She was still mad)
-Next day, Marinette comes into class, everything seemed normal. but something was off.
-Adrien seemed off. Not in an obvious way, he acted very much like Adrien, but she just couldnt place her finger on it.
-His actions felt…. off
-Marinette asked Nino and Alya about it
-Nino says he didnt notice anything Alya said she agreed.
-So Marinette decides that maybe it was just in her head and suddenly an akuma shows up.
-Ladybug on the scene! She is fighting alone at first.
-She starts thinking maybe she caused Chat noir to quit or worse, he was the one akumatized.
-But out of nowhere, He shows up and snags the akumatized item right before he tosses it to Ladybug
-“The akuma’s in there.”
“Chat noir! I .. Oh right.”
-She purifies the akuma, casts Miraculous healing
-Ladybug goes for a fist bump
-Chat noir looks at her weirdly.“Chat?”
-Chat noir simply says"I think it would be better if we leave once the akuma is beaten, your earrings will time out soon, it might result in a close call and your identity being revealed.“
-Ladybug looks at him "Kitty… look about what I said.”
-“Dont apologize Ladybug, while it was not the most ideal method, it was an effective one as it got me to stop pushing an issue you are uncomfortable with.” The cat hero answers
-Ladybug blinks
-Chat noir was so… formal and wooden. It felt completely wrong
-“What happened to you chat, you seem so…”
-“Logical? Well spoken? or the most probable assumption, Emotionless.”
-That last word hit it right on the head
-“The last one.”
-“You arent smiling, not that you would be after yesterday, but you arent mad or sad either. Are you repressing your emotions? Because that isnt healthy and…”
-Chat noir shushes her.
-“I understand your concern. Yesterday I was emotionally vulnerable, I would say the pain was comparable to being stabbed repeatedly in the heart. I remember trying with all of my effort to calm down but couldnt.”
-“An akuma showed up.”
-Ladybug’s eyes went wide."What?”
-“I ran, I couldnt let Hawkmoth akumatize me. I started running and trying to get my emotions together. I couldnt though. My emotions only became more sporadic.”
-“I started looking for something, Anything to help me out of this.”
-His tone maintaining the calm tone throughout the story despite the rising tension and detailed description"But I realized something.“
-Ladybug listening intently."What…. what was it.”
-“I used cataclysm.”
“On the akuma? Is that why your emotionally out of whack? Chat noir we need to talk to Fu and…”
He shakes his head.
-“No, no,no. Cataclysm allows me to destroy anything I touch. If I focus I can destroy something specifically.”
-Ladybug backs away
-"Chat… what did you destroy.”
-My emotions”

Wait was Chat Noir really just sitting there with his legs crossed all googly-eyed and “draw me like one of your French girls” at Ladybug in the middle of an active akuma attack??
