A/N: I thought of using this prompt, since it’s been calling to me the moment I saw it. Enjoy! :)
20. Things you said that I wasn’t meant to hear.
“Did you mean it?”
She sees the way he whirls around, wide summer green eyes meeting hers from where she sits on the bench, hidden by the tree’s shadows, as composed as she ever is with her legs crossed against one another.
They’re not supposed to be here.
The moon is a clear sign why.
He takes a step back, surprise etches on his face as the street light glows faintly on him.
He licks his lips nervously.
She watches.
“I-” He finally composes himself as he stands tall. “Yes, I meant it.”
She gives a sad smile. “You don’t even know me,” She pauses. “And I don’t know you either.”
Lies, her mind whispers.
You know him just fine.
Or so she thinks.
He appears to shrink at her words, and she realises she has never seen him so timid before. “I know,” But then, he meets her eyes again boldly.
“But I won’t take back my words.”
She stares at him, before she stands up, walking towards him.
He stands his ground.
They aren’t supposed to be here.
She isn’t supposed to be in her suit.
And he isn’t supposed to be wandering alone.
And yet, here they are.
She stops right in front of him, eyes searching his expression.
He doesn’t move a muscle.
“Go home,” She whispers. “People like you shouldn’t be alone at this time.”
“People like me?”
She refuses to look away. “Celebrities.”
He does. “Is that what you think of me?”
No.
Of course not.
But she doesn’t say what she wants.
“You’re my responsibility,” She murmurs, brushing her fingers on his cheek. “I need you to be safe.”
He turns and kisses her fingers, his eyes burning with emotions that she feels belittled by it, her own needs starting a fire in her chest.
She pushes everything away.
“Go home.”
He does, his words still ringing in her ears.
She watches him go.
