Eh, I’m still not over the EU straight ignoring Italy’s plea for help in dealing with the refugees crisis for months and having the audacity to say that Italy should control its borders better and possibly reject those who arrive (translation: let refugees die in the sea).

Then when the Calais crisis happened the issue finally became urgent for the EU!

black-in-italy

also guess who would pay the consequences of a possible suspension of the Schengen Agreement?

theoreticalwitchcraft

Tbh I’m surprised they aren’t trying to pull the same shit they proposed for greece, to build a fucking barrier/wall on our border so immigrants and refugees can’t reach other countries.

And let’s not forget they demanded to replace operation mare nostrum with a communitary effort, then gave it less than one third of the funding we were using for our single-country rescue operation… and it’s not like we’re a well-off country. like they’ve always pushed to let people drown

ludwigbeilschmidtstuff

It’s not that simple. Nobody is saying to let the refugees die in the sea but it’s even true that we can’t help everybody. It’s not just about Syrians, it’s about Asians , Middle Easter and Africans all trying to reach Europe. We have to deal with the fact that we can’t welcome everyone in need. We just can’t.
Moreover Italy is not really cooperating.
There are standards EU procedures to process refugees requests (board controls, identity check and so on) that Italy is ignoring. On top of that they are just not rescuing them when they reach the Italian sea, they are going further to Cyprus, Libya and Turkey. Italian government choose (completely against EU regulations) to bring them over from other places and that is irresponsible.

laviniamdm

@ludwigbeilschmidtstuff and what should we do then? People is dying even now we are comfortably talking about their lives and future…

ludwigbeilschmidtstuff

@laviniamdm I know and that’s really sad but people dies every second for many different reasons; that doesn’t mean we can be responsible for any injustice all over the world. Unfortunately Europe is not an endless land with infinite wealth and prosperity. The answer could be helping them to build the society they are looking for here, in their own countries. It’s not easy but it’s worth a try, don’t you think?

black-in-italy

I can understand what you are trying to say but the solutions you are suggesting are not really practical, are they? I mean how do you rescue people and then do an identity check? What do you do with non refugees? Eritreans as well are classified as refugees because of what is happening in their country. Shall we rescue a whole boat of people and then send back (which is expensive) those who couldn’t apply to the status of refugees? It’s not as easy as checking them when they are crossing a normal land border.

Also since the end of mare nostrum Italy haven’t really rescued out of its waters and this whole post could be applied to Greece as well because they’re in the same situation. It’s difficult for everybody involved.

And you could say that Italy isn’t cooperating but why did it take Calais for the EU to finally think about the refugees?

ludwigbeilschmidtstuff

This is not what I’m saying. I’m saying that we should allow less people in because it’s impossible to take care of everybody. As I’ve previously said millions of people are reaching (or trying to) Europe looking for a better life. We can’t help everyone. I’m trying to be realistic.

When we had WWI and WWII all EU countries were involved, a certain amount of people fled Europe for US, South America and Australia but the majority fought back… Some died but for a reason. A better life and a better future. We have been helped (not without consequences of course) to retake Europe and to make it great again.
This is exactly what I meant when I said to help them to build a better life in their own countries.
Do we have any other choice really?
We can’t always draw back and let terrorists or totalitarians take more and more land.

Those nations, their history, heritages needs to be preserved as well.

I also think we should stop fighting with each other. We all have weaknesses, strengths and different interests but at the end we are all Europeans.

black-in-italy

I know we can’t help everybody, but as much as on theory it’s right that some people should fight back,in reality the majority will choose anything to get a better life, as it should be. It’s easy to say, oh we can’t allow them all but when you hear everyday on the news that numbers of children die in shipwrecks what can you do? When you see pictures on our coasts everyday? Mind you, I know that life isn’t an utopia and that there are many difficulties as well with high numbers of refugees, logistically and politically. I’m just saying that on a moral and practical level Italy and Greece can’t ignore what’s happening. And the EU not really helping isn’t right.

I  want to believe in an united Europe and in the EU, I have seen it with my own eyes when I did the Erasmus programme. But I can’t stay silent and pretend that the EU isn’t fucking Italy and Greece over by first ignoring us, then trying to fix the problem only when it started touching them. Now what is the suspension of  the Schengen Agreement going to bring for us? Oh I know already.

theblacklittlemermaid

Ok but what is Europe as a whole doing to make it safe for those people to return home? Absolutely nothing. So in the mean time, we have to find solutions and safe as much people as possible because like who do we let in who do we not let it? That’s just cruel to me..

shishitsunari

The truth is: The EU is just givin no fucks about the immigration problem on Italian coasts. They be like: “Well, I don’t give a fuck about people dying in your sea, I don’t really give a fuck about your country, you are such an useless country in our economy, think yourself about your problems, I just don’t want to help you with YOUR problem, because you can’t do anything for me in exange.”
There’s no place for helping people. Because in the modern economy, if you can’t give nothing, you ARE nothing.
And if I need something yours than you don’t want to share, then, I’m going to take it with force.

I’m not okay to leave people die. Yeah, it’s true, we can’t help everybody, we don’t have a place for everyone, but I prefere to see you without nothing to do, without work, like an average italian, in a popular house near my home, than to know you are dead in some sea.
