HOWEVER, it is VERY rare for copyright owners to crack down on things like fanart, fanfics, etc. (as long as they aren't being sold). Thomas Astruc has said previously that it's ok to make things like

I think there’s been some confusion because I *THINK* that ZAG is going after the re-uploads of the actual show footage (used in pieces in MVs or full episode re-uploads). We should wait for official confirmation. I would be shocked if ZAG were trying to get original fan work (stuff like your animation) taken down. They have a whole wall of fan art at ZAG

*whispers* An AU where Adrien is a prince and Marinette is the daughter of bakers and her parents know how much she wants to go to a ball so they save up and buy her a ticket to go to the upcoming ball. So Marinette makes her own dress and everything and then she goes and it’s a beautiful night in which Adrien really enjoys hanging out with Marinette (to the point where he actively avoids having to interact with anyone else like Nathalie and Chloé, so he’s constantly redirecting Marinette and saying “oh hey look let’s go over here all of a sudden”) and Marinette’s pretty much falling head over heels for this gorgeous, kind boy who’s focusing all of his attention on her (she doesn’t know he’s the prince or she does whatever floats your boat) and then the night is going so well until all of a sudden everything goes to shit because this guy who calls himself Hawkmoth has decided he wants to usurp the throne and there’s chaos and Marinette and Adrien get separated and basically the night ends in screaming and fire and stuff.
And then years later Marinette is the leader of a rebel group against the tyrannical rule of Hawkmoth, and she wears a mask and goes by the name Ladybug to protect her parents and her friends from Hawkmoth (because she’s a huge thorn in his side so he’d definitely be willing to hurt her family and friends if he found out who they were).
And Adrien is hiding from Hawkmoth because he’s the former prince, heir to the throne, so he calls himself Chat Noir and wears a mask and basically just roams the kingdom helping out anyone who’s suffering from Hawkmoth’s rule, feeling terrible about himself because he thinks he’s weak and incapable of stopping Hawkmoth and taking back the throne and stuff.
And both of them fondly remember the night of the ball, and Adrien worries about Marinette and wonders if she’s okay and where she is and what she’s doing and if she’s suffering under Hawkmoth’s rule and stuff.
And Marinette thinks about the gorgeous, kind hearted boy who wanted to spend time with only her for that whole night. And she now knows that he was the prince and she worries that he’s dead or captured and she swears that she will not rest until the kingdom is in the hands of him or someone equally as kind.
And then Chat Noir and Ladybug meet, and Chat is in awe of this… This goddess! This woman who’s risking her life every day to protect his kingdom and his people, who’s fighting to protect their rights. She’s so amazing.
So he joins her group and they become partners, Ladybug and Chat Noir.
And meanwhile, Ladybug’s falling in love with Chat but she doesn’t recognise it because she’s stuck thinking about Adrien.
And maybe they have to help Marinette’s parents at some point, and Chat recognises Marinette in one of their family pictures and he starts to try and subtly ask them if Marinette’s okay, if she’s safe.
And then eventually they’re in the castle in the same ballroom they were in all those years ago and Ladybug tells Chat about the boy she met in that very room so many years ago, and she tells him about how they danced and spoke and laughed and how he showered her with attention like she was the only girl in the world, and how she believed that the kingdom belonged to him, not because it was his birthright but because he was so worthy of ruling his people, because they loved him and he loved them in return. And Chat’s just struck with the realisation that she’s talking about him, that she believes in him so much, and then he realises what she said about meeting him at that ball and he realises that this is Marinette.
And that’s all I’ve thought of so far.
